- — It was a good night Friday for defending individual champions and the expected top teams at the District 10 Class AA Tournament at Sharon High School.

All six former D-10 champs moved on in the winners bracket, while the “Big Four” teams – Reynolds, Greenville, Fort LeBoeuf and Saegertown – dominated the competition.

Reynolds is going for its 20th D-10 team title and leads after one night with 88 points and has 10 wrestlers into the semifinals. Greenville is in second with 77 points and 8 finalists, followed by Fort LeBoeuf 63 and Saegertown 56.5.

But the big points will be scored today as matmen try to reach the finals.

“Having 10 in the semis is about what I expected,” said Reynolds coach Casey Taylor. “But we won a couple I didn’t think we would win, but lost a couple I thought we would win. But that’s the district tournament for you.”

Greenville coach John Reynolds was also pleased with his squad’s showing: “We have eight in the semis and headed for regions. But my perspective is we have to show up and advance as many others as we can.”

Six former champs advanced, headed by two-time winner Tyler Vath (132) of Saegertown. Others are Michael Bartolo (126) and Levi Stoyer (145) of Reynolds; Fort LeBoeuf’s George McGuire (138); Adam Smith (138) of Seneca; and Dylan Reynolds (182) of Saegertown.

Wrestling starts today at 9 a.m. Consolation finals for 3rd and 5th place are set for 3 p.m. Parade of champions and announcements are at 4:45, with finals at 5:30.

Following is a look at the tournament by weight class:

106 - Reynolds freshman Gage Bayless spent only 48 seconds on the mat Friday and will take on Fort LeBoeuf’s Abe Guarriello in today’s semis. Bayless beat Guarriello, 8-1, in the D-10 Duals finals. On the other side of the bracket, Greenville’s Section 2 titlist Michael Lineman takes on Section 1 champ Nate Munsee of Corry.

113 – Seth Hogue of Reynolds was runner-up last year and drives for the finals again after a 10-second pin on opening night. He faces a semis clash with Jamestown’s Faris Messai. Mercer’s Preston Hoover knocked off Section 1 champ Logan Kuzma of Fort LeBoeuf and tangles with Greenville’s Jase Paxson today.

120 – No Mercer County matmen made it to the semis here. Today, Jarrett Carter of Fort LeBoeuf faces Dustin Weilacher of Union City, while Matt Wheeler of Northwestern goes against Bingbong Elizon of Saegertown.

126 – There’s a Reynolds-Fort LeBoeuf matchup here as Raider defending D-10 champ Michael Bartolo faces Tyler Kuzma, who picked up his 100th victory Friday. In the other semi, Commodore Perry’s John Mott will meet Sharon’s Austin Alfreno.

132 – Two-time D-10 champ Tyler Vath of Saegertown goes up against Reynolds’ Joel Leise, who avenged a regular season loss with a 3-2 win over Greenville freshman Blake Reynolds. In the other semi, Section 2` champ Luke Walter meets Section 3 winner Kyle Lukowich of Conneaut Area.

138 – This shapes up to be a finals confrontation of District champions George McGuire of Fort LeBoeuf and Seneca’s Adam Fish. McGuire, a 2012 winner, meets Greenville freshman Gavin Wilkerson, who topped Reynolds’ Alex DiGregorio, 9-2, in the quarters. Fish, a 2013 champ, takes on Nick Monico of Saegertown.

145 – Defending champ Levi Stoyer of Reynolds opened with a pin and meets Derek Watt of Greenville in the semis. The other side of the bracket shows Conneaut’s Taylor Ellis meeting Saegertown’s Matt Humes.

152 – It’s a Reynolds-LeBoeuf meeting in the semis as Raider Mason McCollum faces familiar foe Brad Malinowski. The two has split a pair of decisions this year. McCollum edged Greenville’s Jacob Rickert, 6-3, in the quarterfinals. In the other semi, Cochranton’s Robert Boozer meets Eisenhower’s Louie Head.

160 – Reynolds’ Kegan Miller and Gage Gladysz of Greenville will square of in the semis in a key bout for team points, while Grove City’s Kenny Bable takes on Matt Newara of Harbor Creek on the other side of the bracket.

170 – Greenville’s Zach Miller faces Franklin’s Dakota Geer in a meeting of section champs, while the other semi pairs Reynolds’ Mike Millero with North East’s Jordan Bryan.

182 - Defending champ Dylan Reynolds of Saegertown meets another Reynolds - Justin of Greenville. The Panther edged the Trojans by decision in an earlier meeting this season. On the other side of the bracket, Reynolds’ Austin Moffett faces Jamestown’s Mohammad Messai.

195 - Lakeview’s Marquise Spence is the lone Mercer Countian remaining here and he faces Ryan Morris of Corry in the semis. The other pairing shows Garrett Reinwald of Fort LeBoeuf taking on Zach Stafford of Cambridge Springs.

220 - Not one section champ advanced here, a vary rare event. A big win came from Greenville’s Randall Peabody, who pinned Reynolds’ Cole Rickert. “He’s been working hard with coach Brent Beckstein,” said Trojan mentor Reynolds of Peabody. Peabody will face Conneaut’s Connor Overman, who knocked off Section 1 champ Andrew Phelps. The other semis pairs Mercer’s Colton Smith, a winner over Sectin 3 champ Jason Shappee of Jamestown, against Seneca’s Troy Pusateri.

285 - Unlike the previous weight, all the section champs move on. Defending state champ Sam Breese of Lakeview will meet Fort LeBoeuf’s Nate Conti, while Reynolds’ Gene Ringer tangles with Evan Miller of Cochranton.
