Roundup: SR girls beat Sharpsville; Greenville wins region opener

- — GIRLS BASKETBALL

ä Slippery Rock 43, Sharpsville 36 —
At Sharpsville, the visiting Rockets roared to a 15-2 first-quarter lead, then had to weather the Blue Devils’ rally in the inter-region affair.

Six-foot post Nicole Papley pumped in 13 points for Slippery Rock (2-1), while Eugena Davies drilled 11 and Emily Anderson added 10 for Sharpsville (1-3) while Maddie Przicina notched 4 assists and 7 rebounds; however, Sharpsville scored only 13 field goals, offsetting its 8-for-9 free-throw marksmanship.

ä Farrell 61, Brashear 30 — At Pittsburgh, the visiting Lady Steelers dominatd from the outset, building a 38-15 bulge by the break and never relenting.

Jacque Chambers checked in with a game-high 17 points and Bria Gambill garnered 15 for Farrell (2-3).

Jessica Kopko connected for 10 points for winless Brashear (0-5).

ä Greenville 35, Lakeview 28 — At Stoneboro, the visiting Lady Trojans triumphed by tallying a 26-16 lead through 3 quarters.

Casslyn Holder hit 10 points and Molly Montalvo added 10 markers for Greenville (1-0, 3-2) in the Region 2-AA season-opening affair. 

Sam Womer went for a game-high 14 points to lead Lakeview (0-1, 2-3).

ä West Middlesex 68, Jamestown 28 — At West Middlesex, coach Mike Williams’ Ms. Reds (3-2) led 17-6 after the opening quarter, 30-13 at the break and rolled to the non-region win over the Lady Muskies (0-5).

Morgan Atterholt rifled in 21 points for WM, Noelle Murray bucketed 19 and Allie Staunch tallied 11 markers.

MiKayla Keyser was the leading point-getter for Jamestown with 6 points.

ä Saegertown 39, Reynolds 29 — At Saegertown, the visiting Lady Raiders fell to 0-5 with the 10-point non-region loss to the Lady Panthers (3-2).

Jessica Tomiczek fired in 19 points to lead Saegertown.

Rose Stoyer, Brooke Bresnan and Kayla Thompson all had 8 points each for the Lady Raiders.

ä Commodore Perry 38, Youngsville 34 — At Youngsville, coach Bob Messina’s Lady Panthers (3-2) rallied from a 27-23 deficit after the 3rd quarter and outscored the hosts 15-7 in the final frame to pull out the non-region win.

Emily Kitchen had 17 points for CP and Sarah Nagy tallied 10 markers.

Kennedy Cratty led the way for Youngsville (2-3) with 13 points.

ä Butler 35, Grove City 33 — At Grove City, Butler ended the host Lady Eagles’ season-opening unbeaten skein at 4.

Butler built a 28-23 bulge entering the 4th frame, then weathered Grove City’s comeback bid.

DiPippa pumped in a game-high 16 points for WPIAL Quad-A Butler (3-1).

For Grove City (4-1), Corianna Hyduchak hit for 14 points. However, the Lady Eagles’ 7-for-12 free-throw shooting proved costly. Butler was not much better, sinking 9 of 15 attempts.

BOYS BASKETBALL

ä Sharon 80, VisionQuest 57 —
At Sharon, the host Tigers tallied 29 first-period points en route to the inter-region rout.

Jason Austin annexed a career-high 26-point performance for Class AAA Sharon (3-1), which notched its 3rd consecutive conquest. Also, Mark Henry hit for 16.

For Class A VisionQuest (1-4), Jesse Robinson, Khazeem Brown and James White went for 17, 15 and 11 points, respectively.

ä Commodore Perry 49, Calvary Baptist Christian Academy 42 — At Sheakleyville, the host Panthers prevailed in the non-league outing.

Perry rallied from a 17-11 first-quarter deficit to draw within 30-29 by halftime. Then during the 2nd half the Panthers pounced defensively, limiting CBCA to just 12 points in 16 minutes.

Sean Britton bucketed 14 points and Tyler McCracken mustered 14 markers for Commodore Perry (2-3).

McCrillis collected a game-high 18 points for Calvary Baptist Christian Academy.

BOYS SWIMMING

ä Titusville 116, Hickory 45 —
The Hornets bowed to the perennial powerhouse Rockets. Top performers for Hickory were:

200 IM and 100 backstroke, Ryan Elsey, 1st in both; 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relays ( Kevin Hartenstein, Ryan Elsey, Trand Wright, Kyle Hartenstein), both 2nd; 100 and 50 freestyles, Wright, 2nd in both; 200 and 500 freestyles, Kevin Hartenstein, 2nd in both.

GIRLS SWIMMING

ä Titusville 89, Hickory 80 —
The Lady Hornets dropped a close battle to the Lady Rockets.

Winning events for Hickory were: 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays (Breah Quatkemeyer, Devin Javens, Delaney Javens, Delaney Takoch); 200 freestyle, Takoch; 200 IM, 500 free and 100 butterfly, Delaney Javens; 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke, Devin Javens; 100 breaststroke, Paige Brown.

BOYS BOWLING

ä Brookfield 2200, Heartland Christian 1742 —
At Hunt Club Lanes in Salem, Ohio, Adam Brooks rolled a 454, Bradley Bridge had a 352 and Nelson Swartz bowled a 351 in leading the Warriors past HC.

Patrick Finnegan (393), Solomon Driscoll (315) and Irina Wilson (239) were the top rollers for HC.
