Roundup: GC edges Hickory in 5-AAA clash

- — BOYS BASKETBALL

ä Grove City 68, Hickory 66 —
At Grove City, the visiting Hornets had an opportunity to tie, but a turnover in the closing 3 seconds spelled defeat in the Region 5-AAA showdown.

Grove City garnered an 11-10 first-quarter lead before Hickory harvested a 28-27 margin at intermission. The Hornets extended their edge to 48-45 through 3 quarters, but were outscored 23-18 during the final frame.

For Grove City (3-1, 8-1), Foster Reznor rifled in a game-high 27 points, while Derek Turner and Danny Torok tallied 17 and 16, respectively. The Eagles ended just 13 for 28 from the free-throw line, but compensated by drilling 8 from beyond the arc.

For Hickory (1-2, 5-2), Aaron Conley connected for a career-best 19 points and 11 rebounds and Bubba Pryts also pounded out a 16-point, 11-rebound double-double, while Anthony Cannone contributed 13 points. However Hickory converted only half of its 14 free-throw attempts, Head Coach Geoff Evans reported.

ä Greenville 64, Conneaut Area 48 — At Linesville, the visiting Trojans triumphed in the inter-region affair, as Aaron Emmett ended with a 17-point, 9-rebound line. Also for Greenville (6-2), Matt Jones joined in with 15 points and Tyler Fattman fired in 10 for Head Coach Todd Nehlen.

For CASH (2-8), Tommy Detelich deposited 14 points and Taylor Williams went for 13, tossing in a trio of triples.

ä Meadville 67, George Junior Republic 60 — At Meadville Senior High’s “House of Thrills,” the Tigers (1-3, 3-5) led 27-21 at halftime, but the Bulldogs stormed back and outscored GJR 46-33 in the 2nd half to win the Region 5-AAA contest.

Trevor Clune fired in 25 points to lead Meadville while Faizon McClure bucketed 18 and Shequan Lindsey tallied 11.

Ron Pearson led the way for GJR with 20 points while Malik Gibson and Jamair Holloway had 10 each.

ä West Middlesex 62, Mercer 57 — At the County Seat, the visiting Big Reds rolled to the Region 2-AA road win by building a 31-21 bulge at the break, then withstanding Mercer’s late rally.

For West Middlesex (2-0, 5-4), Trey Staunch scored a game-high 26 points, while Ryan Dogan drilled 4 triples for 13 and Josh Porterfield pounded the paint for 10.

Staunch scored 9 fourth-period points, offsetting 8 by Logan Clarke.

For Mercer (0-2, 4-4), Clarke, Jake Schmid and Jon Scheidhauer scored 17, 15 and 14 points, respectively. The Mustangs mustered 11-for-12 free-throw marksmanship, compared with 5-for-12 for Middlesex.

ä Wilmington 57, Sharpsville 48 — At New Wilmington, the Hounds (1-0, 5-3) won their Region 2-AA opener over the Blue Devils (0-2, 3-6).

Jesse Hilliard fired in a game-high 17 points for Wilmington while Spencer DeMedal scored 11 and Travis Brumbaugh added 10 markers.

Sage Barringer scored 16 for the Blue Devils, Kyle Kennedy bucketed 15 and Greg Popatak tallied 10 markers.

ä Reynolds 38, Lakeview 37 — At Transfer, Garhett Frable gave the Raiders (2-0, 7-1) the lead on an offensive rebound put-back with 25 seconds left and Reynolds’ defense made it stand up in a thrilling 1-point Region 2-AA win over the Sailors (1-1, 4-5).

Frable notched a 15-point, 12-rebound double-double for the Raiders.

Brandon Rice led Lakeview with 15 points and Austin Rice tallied 13.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

ä Sharpsville 26, Greenville 18 —
At Greenville, coach Jeff Hanley’s Lady Blue Devils (1-1, 4-5) won the defensive Region 2-AA struggle vs. the Lady Trojans (1-1, 4-4).

Eugena Davies led the way for Sharpsville with 12 points, 6 assists and 5 steals while Izzy Schell grabbed 8 rebounds.

Molly Montalvo was the leading scorer for the Lady Trojans with 8 points.

ä Hickory 69, Beaver Falls 20 — At Beaver Falls recently, the Lady Hornets improved to a perfect 9-0 with the rout.

Nikki Arbanas rifled in 22 points for Hickory, Holly Grober bucketed 17 and Nicole Lacava tallied 11 markers.

Brookfield Tourney

ä Brookfield 49, Sharon 41 —
Ashley Kirila connected for 14 points and All-Tourney Team pick Danielle DiCristofaro finished with 16. Saxton also was selected All-Tourney.

For Sharon, Mallory Torr tallied a game-high 17 points and was chosen to the All-Tourney Team, along with Lady Tigers teammate Lexi Dabney, who deposited 11.

WRESTLING

ä Lakeview 42, Sharpsville 27 —
At Stoneboro, the Sailors captured 9 of the 14 matches over the Blue Devils (3-4).

Jake Heim (132) posted the lone fall for Lakeview while Owen Clayton (120), Cody Persch (138), Skyler Curry (145) and Marquis Spence (195) all won by decision.

Miles Bowser (160), Gage Priester (170) and P.J. Campoli (182) posted pins for Sharpsville.
