High school spring sports action in full swing

MERCER COUNTY — BOYS TENNIS

ä Grove City 5, Rocky Grove 0 — The Eagles of coach Shawn Sowers moved to 2-0 in the region and 6-0 overall with the victory on Tuesday.

Singles: Matt Welker def. Trevor Irwin, 6-0, 6-0; Evan Lowers def. Henry Gent, 6-1, 6-1; Chris Adams def. Austen Barnett, 6-4, 6-2. Doubles: Dylan Motta-Ravi Patel def. Isaac Cora-Colton Miller, 6-2, 6-1; Kyle Yeakle-Frank Bassani def. Jace Junk-Damien Maxwell, 6-0, 6-1.

ä Grove City 5, Oil City 0 — At Oil City on Monday, the visiting Grovers garnered the road win.

No scores were reported, but Welker, Lowers, and Adams won singles matches, as did the doubles duos of Motta-Patel and Andrew McCracken-Frank Bassani.

SOFTBALL

ä Sharpsville 4, Reynolds 3 — At Sharpsville, Rachel Harenchar singled in the game-tying run in the 7th stanza, then scored the game-winner on a passed ball.

Maddie Shuttleworth won the pitchers’ duel, going the distance, allowing 10 hits and striking out 3. Reynolds’ Paige Baker scattered 7 hits and whiffed a dozen.

For Sharpsville (4-1), McKenzie Popatak singled and doubled and Megan Davis drilled 2 hits.

For Reynolds, Hailey Gearhart garnered 3 hits, Autumn Babcock banged a pair, and Sam Campbell clubbed a double.

ä Wilmington 6, Sharon 4 —At New Wilmington, right-hander Abby Sotter silenced Sharon’s sticks on a handful of hits. Sotter struck out 13 and walked 3 in a route-going performance.

With a 6-4 lead Sotter escaped a bases-loaded, no-out situation in the 7th after allowing a walk and pair of singles. She struck out back-to-back batters, then retired the side on a comebacker.

Also for Wilmington (1-0 Region 2-AA, 5-0 overall), Alanna Elliott ended with 3 hits, Megan Houyouse had 2 hits and 2 RBI, and Courtney Cohen clouted a 2-run double, as did Lexie Donati.

For Sharon (0-1, 3-2), losing hurler Gabby Gadola gave up 6 runs on 11 hits, whiffed 2 and hit a batter. Kayla Reardon ripped a 2-run triple for the Lady Tigers, too.

ä West Middlesex 7, Kennedy Catholic 5 — At West Middlesex, Jordyn Allen pitched a complete game, whiffing 6, walking 1 and allowed 8 hits. She helped herself by stroking 2 hits.

Also for West Middlesex (1-0 region, 4-2 overall), Aly Andrusky added a 2-run double and Sara McFarland mustered a single and double.

Keying KC (0-1, 1-2) were Anna Benson, Abby Ferlin and losing hurler Emilee Taylor, each of whom ripped a pair of hits, and Courtney Sargent, who scorched a single and triple. Taylor also went the route, permitting 8 hits and striking out 3 while not issuing a walk

Kennedy committed 5 miscues, Middlesex 3.

ä Lakeview 4, Mercer 1 — At Brandy Springs Park, Mercer, the visiting Lady Sailors coasted on the complete-game, 3-hit pitching of  Mahen, who mustered 9 strikeouts and walked only 2.

She threw 73 strikes out of 107 pitches, and aided her own cause by stroking a pair of hits, one of which was a home run.

Also leading Lakeview was McClelland, who muscled 2 hits, including a double.

For Mercer, losing moundsman M. Shoemaker allowed 5 hits and 4 runs (3 earned) in 4 frames. She whiffed 3 and walked 3. Cameron relieved, tossing 3 innings of 2-hit relief and striking out 6.



Twenty-seven of her 43 pitches were strikes. Also, H. Woods whacked 2 of Mercer’s 3 hits.

ä Conneaut Area 12, Grove City 3 — At Grove City Memorial Park, Sahara Blair batted and pitched the visiting Lady Eagles to a road win.

Blair banged a double and pair of homers, driving in 4 runs, and she pitched a complete game, scattering 7 hits, fanning 5 and walking 2.

Also for Conneaut (1-0 region), Becca Hazen, Kristen Laird and Kristen Baker all singled and doubled.

For Grove City (0-1, 0-6), losing hurler Maddie Elberty allowed 10 hits, but fanned 5 and walked only 1. Also, Taylor Shingledecker singled and doubled and Katie Maine doubled.

BOYS TRACK & FIELD

ä Wilmington 96, Reynolds 54 — At Transfer, the visiting Greyhounds garnered the road rout of the Raiders, led by throw Jon Yohman’s sweep of the shot put and discus, as well as versatile Slavi Pontius (high hurdles, high jump, 4x4 relay leg).

For Reynolds, Corey Woods triple-jumped 40 feet, 2 inches, while speedster Dailey doubled up in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, while anchoring the Raiders’ victorious sprint-relay quartet.

ä Hickory 129, Sharon 21 — At Hornet Stadium, host Hickory (2-0), harvested the win, led by sprinter DeShawn Coleman (100, 200, sprint-relay anchor), Luke Lewis (shot, disc), Kevin Jancsar (1600, distance and mile relay legs), and distance ace Logan Griffen (open 3200, 4x8 relay leg), as well as Mark Wagner in the 400 and 4x4 relay.

Jon Jacoway swept the high and triple jumps for Sharon, soaring 6-4 in the former.

ä West Middlesex 125, Farrell 24; West Middlesex 141, Kennedy Catholic 8 — At West Middlesex, the Big Reds of coach Ed Pikna rolled to a pair of wins, highlighted by Chris Harrison setting a school record in the discus.

Harrison tossed the disc 155 feet, breaking the mark of 152-9 set by Chris Negrea (1996).

In both meets, Jeremy Jancso was a triple individual winner in the long, triple and high jumps, while Clay Allen doubled in the 100 and 200, and Austin Mirizio won both hurdles events.



GIRLS TRACK & FIELD

ä Wilmington 103, Reynolds 47 — At Transfer, speedster Tessa Sikora (100, 200, plus the high jump), distance ace Rikki Brumbaugh (3200-meter run, distance-relay leg) and thrower Julie Falvo (shot, disc) led the Lady Hounds. Also, Hannah Drake doubled up in the long and triple jumps.

For Reynolds, Candi Arnold annexed wins in the 800- and 1600-meter runs and anchored the Lady Raiders’ winning mile-relay foursome. Also Brooke Bresnan (high hurdles, 4x4 leg) contributed for Reynolds.

ä West Middlesex 138, Kennedy Catholic 10; West Middlesex 131, Farrell 17 — At West Middlesex, the Ms. Reds of coach Bob Morris dominated led by Sara Lucich who set a school recod in the javelin.

Lucich tossed the spear 126-5, beating the mark of Jessica Bittler (123-9) from 2010.

Kelsey Murray won both hurdles events for West Middlesex, while Rachel DeMaria won the discus and shot put.

The lone winner for Kennedy was Godfrey in the 100, while Farrell’s Jarissa Sharper won the 100 and 200.

ä Hickory 117, Sharon 33 — At Hornet Stadium, Lexi Bible bested the field in the 1600- and 3200-meter runs and lent a leg to the winning distance relay to lead host Hickory.

Also for the Lady Hornets (1-0-1), Madi Bell (high hurdles, sprint-relay leg), Nikki Arbanas (100, sprint-relay leg), Jackie White (800, 4x8 relay leg) and Morgan Pellis (long jump, sprint-relay leg) set the pace.

Davis dominated for Sharon, winning the 200- and 400-meter sprints and anchoring the triumphant Lady Tigers’ 4x4 relay foursome.

BASEBALL

ä West Middlesex 4, Reynolds 0 — At West Middlesex Monday, the Big Reds rode the arm of Mike Ginther and solid defense to the shutout.

Ginther fanned 11 and allowed 4 hits in going the distance. Aaron Webb clubbed a pair of homers, while Jared Palmer poled a single and homer.

For Reynolds, Mahlon took the loss, whiffing 10, while yielding 5 hits. He aided his cause with 3 singles.

ä Rocky Grove 9, Lakeview 6 — At Stoneboro Monday, the host Sailors dropped to 0-3 in the loss to the Grovers. Brett Schneider was the winning pitcher, while Zack Bigley took the loss. Scott Murray and Schneider blasted homers for the winners (2-1).

Shane Whitehouse had a double, while Andrew Parimuha and Brandon Persch homered for the Sailors.

ä Edgewood 11, Brookfield 1 (6 inn.) — At Brookfield Twp. Park on Monday, the visitors from Ashtabula were led by Andrew Graeb, Connor McLaughlin and Steve Perkio, each with 2 hits. Graeb and McLaughlin each tallied 3 times and Alex Newsome tallied twice.

Winning pitcher Joey Zappitelli went the distance, fanning 4, walking 3 and allowing just 4 hits, including 3 from Jeremy Quinlan, which included a triple. Eric Martin drove in the Warriors’ lone run, while Anthony Weibruda was the losing hurler.

POSTPONED

Tuesday’s Sharpsville-at-Lakeview track meet was postponed and tentatively scheduled for April 23, with both teams at Reynolds.
