Roundup: Reynolds, Mercer, Hickory, Sharpsville teams win

ä Reynolds 9, Kennedy Catholic 0 —
At Hermitage, pitcher Paige Baker baffled the host Lady Golden Eagles. Baker (2-2) tossed a complete-game 2-hitter, whiffing 8 and walking 4. She helped herself by singling and tripling.

Also for coach Wilbur Juranovich, Autumn Babcock banged 3 doubles, Kristen Shearer singled twice and doubled, and Madison Rhoades singled and doubled for the Lady Raiders (5-1, 5-4).

Emilee Taylor was tagged with the mound loss for KC, as she allowed 9 hits and walked 5 while fanning 5 in a route-going effort. Kelsey Ferlin and Anna Benson’s base hits were the extent of the Lady Golden Eagles’ offense.

ä Mercer 8, Wilmington 2 — At Brandy Springs Park, Mercer, coach Jack Trott’s Lady M’s (3-1, 7-2) handed the ’Hounds their 2nd loss in as many days as Melissa Shoemaker fired a complete-game 2-hitter with only 1 walk.

Offensively for Mercer, Aubrey Angermeier, Heather Woods and Amanda Cameron had 3 singles each, Jess Province doubled and Analise Whenry singled and tripled.

Abby Sotter was tagged with the loss for Wilmington, which lost to Hickory 3-2 on Monday. Sotter struck out 7, walked 1 and gave up a dozen hits.

ä Sharpsville 8, Commodore Perry 1 — At Sheakleyville, Maddie Shuttleworth tossed a complete-game 5-hitter with 3 strikeouts as the visiting Blue Darlings (4-1, 6-2) beat the Lady Panthers.

Eugena Davies tripled and singled for Sharpsville, Megan Davis doubled and singled, and McKenzie Popatak, Megan Whalen and Alivia Shuttleworth had 2 singles each.

Emily Kitchen led CP as she doubled at the plate and went the distance on the mound with 3 strikeouts, but 11 hits allowed.

ä Hickory 16, Slippery Rock 1 (3 inn.) — At Hermitage, Danielle Collier blasted a grand slam and Courtney Maniscalco drove in 4 runs as the Lady Hornets (7-1) routed Slippery Rock.

Maniscalco singled and doubled and Victoria Tomko drove in a run. Lauren Kizak went the distance for Hickory with 2 strikeouts, 1 walk and yielded 2 hits.

Morgan Longdon took the loss for the Lady Rockets. She walked 6 and gave up 10 runs on 6 hits in 2 innings of mound duty.

ä Corry 12, Grove City 1 (6 inn.) — At Corry, Shannon Baker led the Lady Beavers (7-1) to a win over the Lady Eagles (3-9). Baker struck out 6, issued 1 walk and only allowed 5 hits in going the distance for Corry. At the plate, she belted a solo home run and singled.

Cassie Feather went the distance for GC. She struck out 3, walked 4 and gave up 5 earned runs on 9 hits. Kristi Sestak led Grove City at the plate with a pair of doubles.

BASEBALL

ä Grove City 5, Conneaut Area 2 —
At Grove City’s Memorial Park in the completion of a weather-suspended game, the host ’Grovers garnered the region win.

Matt Gordon, with a save from Ryan Grace, got credit for the win. Gordon, in 3 innings of 1-hit work, walked 2 and struck out 7, while Grace fanned 4, walked 2 and yielded 4 hits in 4 frames.

Also for Grove City (3-0, 8-2), Matt Gordon doubled home a run, Jesse Hodge singled home a pair, and Dustin Maine doubled.

Cole Baker singled and doubled and Jake Andrew singled twice for Conneaut Area.

ä Reynolds 5, Hickory 3 — At Transfer, Jack Mahlon pitched a gem as the Raiders topped the Hornets. Mahlon fanned 12, walked 2 and gave up 6 hits in going the distance for Reynolds (2-5, 3-5).

At the dish for Reynolds, Mahlon ripped an RBI-double and scored, Neal Engstrom doubled, singled and scored a run, Kellen Gursky registered an RBI-double and scored, Paul Torok collected an RBI- single and scored and Jordan Weaver added an RBI-double.

Steve Piston went the distance for Hickory. He whiffed 4 batters, walked 1 and gave up 6 hits. No hitting stats were reported for the Hornets.

BOYS TENNIS

ä Grove City 3, Mercyhurst Prep 2 —
At Grove City, Matt Welker and Chris Adams won in singles play and the team of Dylan Motta and Ravi Patel teamed up for a victory at No. 1 doubles as the Eagles (9-1) edged the Lakers.

Singles: Welker (GC) def. Ryan Campbell, 6-1, 6-0; Alex Schoeck (MP) def. Evan Lowers, 6-3, 6-0; Adams (GC) won by default. Doubles: Motta-Patel (GC) def. Mitch McBride-Nick Kneidinger, 6-0, 6-0; Josh Ott-Carson Darrow (MP) def. Kyle Yeakle-Andrew McCracken, 6-3, 6-2.

ä Hickory 4, Greenville 1 — At Greenville, the visiting Hornets won for the 2nd straight day (having beaten Sharon 4-1 Monday) and improved to a perfect 8-0 with the win over the Trojans.

Singles: Chad Ferguson (G) def. Ross Rosati, 6-0, 6-0; John Smaltz (H) def. Seth Jaussen, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4; Michael Funera (H) def. Trent McErlane, 6-2, 7-6(7-5). Doubles: Nick Petrochko-Nelson Murphy (H) def. Joey Safner-Jing Wu, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1; Stephen Petrochko-Zach Walters (H) def. David Jeffries-John Stapchuk, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

BOYS TRACK & FIELD

ä West Middlesex 95, Wilmington 55 —
At New Wilmington, Clay Allen won the 100- (11.1) and 200-meter (22.4) dashes, the long jump (21-5 3/4) and ran the anchor leg on the 1st-place 1600 relay team (3:46.2) as the Big Reds (6-0) beat Wilmington.

Luke Patten won the 400, triple jump and pole vault for WM while Sebastian Grasso, Austin Mirizio and Isaac Williams were double-event winners.

Jon Yohman won the shot put (59-6) and discus (160-3) for Wilmington, and Scott captured the 300 hurdles and ran on the winning 3200 relay squad.

ä Mercer 100, Farrell 41; Mercer 107, Kennedy Catholic 36 — At the County Seat, the host Mustangs mustered the sweep, led by distance ace Kevin Reno, middle-distance standouts Levi Bequeath and Nathan Breese, thrower Moon (discus, javelin) and versatile sprinter/hurdler Hoffman.

For Farrell, Tyrone Archie annexed a double-double in the 200- and 400-meter dashes, and John Jackson joined with a win in the 100, while Kennedy Catholic’s Jacob Feeney finished 1st in the long and high jumps.

ä Reynolds 115, Sharpsville 35; Lakeview 104, Reynolds 46 — At Transfer, the host Raiders recorded a split, led by hurler Levi Stoyer, jumpers Corey Woods and Ryan Sherbondy, and sprinter Billy Trott, who swept the 100- and 200-meter dashes against Sharpsville.

DelFratte, in the 400, and Calleja, in the 3200-meter run, secured Sharpsville’s lone successes in open events.

For Lakeview, Zach VanDusen dominated, sweeping the 100 and long and triple jumps, while sprinter Blake Reddick, and distance ace Devin Workman and middle-distance standout Billy Kinsey also led Lakeview (7-0).

ä Hickory 145, Commodore Perry 5; Hickory 117, George Junior Republic 33 — At Hornet Stadium, the host Hornets (5-0) harvested the sweep, led by middle-distance ace Kevin Jancsar, sprinter DeShawn Coleman, versatile Matt Voytik, thrower Luke Lewis and distance ace Logan Griffen.

Lewis launched the shot 57 feet, one-half inch.

Ronald Pearson produced a pair of wins in the 400-meter dash and long jump for GJR.

ä Grove City 116, Sharon 34 — At Grove City’s Forker Field, Dan Jaskowak’s trio of triumphs led the host Eagles, while hurdler Kyle Trinch, and middle-distancemen Ryan Whiteman, Ryan Budnik and John-Scott Somora posted double-doubles.

Jumper Jonathan Jacoway, joined by sprinters Wanya Smith-Austin and Carnell Hawkins, both of whom had 2 wins each.

Jacoway high-jumped 6 feet, 7 inches for the Tigers (2-3).

GIRLS TRACK & FIELD

ä Wilmington 78, West Middlesex 72 —
At New Wilmington, Allison Baldwin, Hannah Drake and Tess Sikora won 4 events each as the Lady Hounds beat WM (6-1) for the 2nd straight year in the regular season.

Baldwin and Drake both ran on the 1st-place 1600 and 3200 relay teams while Baldwin also won the 400 and 800 and Drake captured the long and triple jumps. Sikora took top honors in the 100, 200, high jump and 400 relay (anchor leg).

Chloe Tyillian broke her own school record (set last week vs. Brookfield) in the 3200 run (12:11.7). Kelsey Murray swept the hurdles (17.3 and 50.1).

“Both teams did an excellent job,” said WM coach Bob Morris. “It was a great meet with outstanding times and distances. We salute our kids and Wilmington for their great effort.”

ä Mercer 127, Farrell 17; Mercer 108, Kennedy Catholic 40 — At the County Seat, Janette Berger swept the hurdles, A.Conner copped a double-double in the discus and javelin, and Courtney Young sprinted to a win in the 100 and contributed to the victorious sprint-relay team, and did sprinter Mindy Brown, jumper Lynn Swartbeck and pole-vaulted Katie Platt.

Jarissa Sharper secured Farrell’s lone 1st-place finish in the 200-meter dash, while Jessica Garcia garnered a sweep of the 800-, 1600- and 3200-meter runs to key Kennedy Catholic.

ä Reynolds 83, Sharpsville 65; Lakeview 102, Reynolds 48 — At Transfer, the host Lady Raiders settled for a split.

Leading Lakeview were sprinter/hurder Taylor Reed, jumper Courtney King, thrower Alexandra Ruediger, and sprinter Marla Holland.

For Reynolds, versatile Brooke Bresnan, thrower Morgan McDanel, distance ace Candi Arnold and sprinter Rose Stoyer led the way, while Madison Przicina prevailed in the 200- and 400-meter dashes for Sharpsville.   

ä Hickory 147, Commodore Perry 3 — At Hornet Stadium, host Hickory (3-0-1) had several multiple-event winners, including distance standout Lexie Bible, middle-distance aces Jackie White and Jenna Placzek, and verstile Cali Free, as well as sprinter Nikki Arbanas.

ä Grove City 126, Sharon 24 — At Forker Field in Grove City, Mary Jaskowak and Abby Casalnova in the distances, sprinter Courtney Corbin, and McKenzie Fagan, who swept all 3 jumps, led the host Ldy Eagles.

The visiting Lady Tigers tumbled to 2-3.
