Roundup: Mustangs beat Sailors; Hickory rolls past GC

Herald staff

---- — The powers that be are beginning to shape up in the local regions as area teams go head-to-head.

In Region 3-AA, while Greenville edged Sharon in a battle of unbeatens, Hickory put on a dominating performance for a second straight week by routing Grove City, 37-7. Other AA contests saw Reynolds rout Saegertown, 52-7, and Wilmington pound Titusville, 47-0.

In Region 1-AA, the key game of the night was at Mercer where the Mustangs of coach Pat McClearn notched a huge victory over Lakeview, 19-8. In another A games, Sharpsville crushed Kennedy Catholic, 50-6, and West Middlesex beat Conneaut Area, 31-21.

In non-region action Friday, Farrell rolled past District 9 Redbank Valley, 40-22, and Brookfield lost a battle of unbeatens as they fell to Struthers, 26-7.

Following are the results reported to The Herald:

ä Hickory 37, Grove City 7 — At Grove City, the Hornets of coach Bill Brest rolled to the key Region 3-AA win.

Hickory, which saw its only loss of the season come in its region opener against Greenville after building a 21-0 first half lead, has left nothing to chance the last two weeks in dominating Wilmington and Grove City on both sides of the ball.

Quarterback Matt Voytik had an impressive game again, passing for three touchdowns while rushing for 130 yards. Voytik connected with Davon Tindall on two of the TDs of 48 and 6 yards, while hooking up with Anthony Cannone on a 4-yard tally. Tindall also had a score on a 16-yard run while Lou Derloni hit paydirt on a 5-yard burst.

Talented toe Jordan Wombacker hit on a 20-yard field goal and added 4 PAT kicks for the Hornets (2-1 Region 3-AA, 3-1).

In all, the Hickory offense rolled up 25 first downs and 483 total yards.

For Grove City (2-1, 3-1), the lone score came in the second quarter on an 11- yard run by Foster Reznor.

Not to be outdone, the Hickory defense was just as impressive in shutting down Grove City, yielding only 104 total yards of offense. Zach Cirillo had 5 unassisted tackles, while Wombacker, Tyle Reardon and Nathan Aikens had 4 apiece.

ä Mercer 19, Lakeview 8 — At the county seat, the host Mustangs of coach Pat McClearn may have surprised some people with the victory over Region 1-A preseason favorite Lakeview in the battle of unbeatens.

But the Mustangs, who totaled only 3 wins last year, have been showing they are determined to make a return to the District 10 playoffs this season, possibly wearing the Region crown as well.

The Mustangs defense, which has been sound all year, effectively shut down the county’s leading rusher Blake Reddick, holding the Sailors senior to only 61 yards on 18 carries. The Mustangs also picked off three passes, while Lakeview grabbed a pair of interceptions.

Mercer (3-0 Region 1-A, 4-0)  jumped out to an early lead on a 23-yard scoring pass from Logan Clarke to T.J. Peters and Chase Hoffman added the point after.

The lead held until early in the fourth period when the Sailors scored on a 5-yard run by Reddick. Quarterback Zach Bigley carried for a two-point conversion and an 8-7 front.

The the rest of the game belonged to Mercer. QB Logan Clarkem who passed for 195 yards, scored on a 2-yard run and Zane O’Brien pounded in from 6-yards out.

ä Sharpsville 50, Kennedy Catholic 6 — At McCracken Field in Sharpsville, Ben BuCher scored a trio of touchdowns as coach Paul Piccirilli’s Blue Devils (2-1, 3-1) rolled past KC (0-3, 0-4) in the Region 1-A encounter.

Sharpsville led 28-0 at the end of the 1st quarter, 42-0 at halftime and cruised past the Golden Eagles.

BuCher scored on runs of 34 and 26 yards and also hauled in a 31-yard TD pass from Nick Henwood.

Tyler Wansack had scoring runs of 6 and 33 yards for Sharpsville, Henwood reached the endzone on a 13-yard run and George Keck broke loose for a 59-yard run in the 4th quarter and then scored on the next play on a 1-yard run.

Nathan Lutz converted 6 extra-point kicks for the Blue Devils and Dayne Smith pulled in a 2-point conversion pass.

Kennedy Catholic scored in the 4th quarter on a 43-yard touchdown pass from Kahliq Ragster to Carmen Schuville. The 2-point conversion run failed.

BuCher rushed for 82 yards, Keck had 62 and Wansack talied 52 for the Blue Devils. Henwood was 3-of-4 for 66 yards and BuCher led the team in receiving (2-37).

Ragster had 47 rushing yards for KC and was 3-of-10 for 54 yards with 1 TD and 1 interception. Schuville grabbed all 3 passes for the Golden Eagles for 54 yards.

ä Wilmington 47, Titusville 0 — At Greyhounds Stadium in New Wilmington, coach Terry Verrelli’s squad rebounded from last week’s loss to Hickory by routing the winless Rockets (0-3, 0-4) in a Region 3-AA clash.

The Hounds (1-2, 2-2), which led 13-0 after the opening frame and 33-0 at halftime, rumbled for 327 rushing yards and limited Titusville to 76 yards on the ground and 25 in the air.

Josiah Bloise scored on runs of 3 and 5 yards, Riley Kollar had a 2-yard TD run, Mitchell Whiting returned a fumble 63 yards for a score, Jacob Sotter notched a 2-yard TD run, Spencer DeMedal scored from 50 yards out and Dwight Scott broke loose for a 68-yard scoring run.

James Gardner booted 3 extra points for Wilmington and Kyler Lum had 2 PATs.

No individual stats on either team was reported to The Herald.

ä West Middlesex 31, Conneaut Area 21 — At Big Reds Stadium in West Middlesex, coach Ed Roberson’s Big Reds improved to 2-0 in Region 1-A and 3-1 overall with the 10-point win over Conneaut Area.

Chandler Tyillian gave the Big Reds a 6-0 lead in the 1st quarter on a TD run. The extra-point attempt was blocked.

Conneaut took a 7-0 lead in the 2nd quarter on a 20-yard run by Anderton and a PAT, but WM answered on a TD run by quarterback Trey Staunch. Staunch added the 2-point conversion run and the Big Reds led 14-7 at halftime.

WM increased its lead to 17-7 early in the 3rd quarter on a 27-yard field goal by Tyillian. Conneaut cut the lead to 17-14 on a 4-yard run by Merritt and the PAT.

In the 4th quarter, Dillon Fair and Tyillian caught TD passes from Staunch and Eric Lucich had a 2-point conversion run. Merritt scored on a 10-yard run for Conneaut.

Staunch was 13-of-21 for 128 yards, 2 TD passes and 1 pick. Lucich rushed for 91 yards and Tyillian had 88. Fair hauled in 8 passes for 89 yards.
