Roundup: WM, Mercer girls soccer teams win

ä West Middlesex 3, Sharon 1 —
At Tiger Stadium, Coach Mike Williams’ visiting Ms. Reds rolled on goals from Riley Lyons, Kaitlyn Beck and Gretchen Elsey.

Kayla Ballard, Molly Stonebreaker and Delaney David were credited with assists, while goalkeeper Brianna Spencer made 11 saves for West Middlesex (3-4 region, 6-5-1 overall).

Ashlyn Zajac, assisted by Emma Levitt, scored for Sharon.

ä Hickory 3, Canfield 3 — At Canfield, the Lady Hornets led 3-1 after the opening half, but Canfield, which is ranked 7th in the Buckeye State, rallied to tie the match on a penalty kick in the last minute.

Jackie White, Sara Suler and Lauren Bell notched the goals for Hickory (11-1-1). White and Jada Poindexter had assists and Morgan McBride made 10 saves in goal.

Elena Billy scored a pair of goals for Canfield and Bailey Fischer had the other one. Raquel Abel registered 8 saves between the pipes for the Lady Cardinals.

JV: Canfield, 2-1.

ä Mercer 6, Sharpsville 1 — At McCullough Run, the visiting Lady M’s Megan McKinney mustered 4 goals. Also for Mercer, Bethany Juergens and Alexis Mills scored, while goalkeeper Samantha Carr yielded only 1 goal.

For Sharon (1-6 Region 1, 2-9 overall), Ashley Vansickle scored, while Rachel Toy and Juliana Sickafus split time in goal.

ä Slippery Rock 4, Grove City 2 — At Slippery Rock, Jenna Whitmer buried a pair of goals in the back of the net in leading the Lady Rockets past the Lady Eagles.

Molly Joyce and Bailey Boyd scored the other goals for Slippery Rock.

For Grove City, Grace Dadzaa scored off an assist from Katelyn Williams in the 1st half. Julie DiStasi registered a 2nd-half goal for the Lady Eagles.


ä Wilmington 3, Grove City 2 —
At Grove City, the visiting Lady Greyhounds gained the win on singles successes by Alana Elliott and Niki McCown, and the 2nd doubles duo of Taylor Cox-Allison Krupa.

For Grove City (6-8), Katie Kosick, at 2nd singles, and the 1st tandem of Maddie Jazwinski-Morgan McCommon were winners.

Singles: Elliott (W) def. Claire Casalnova, 6-4, 6-3; Kosick (GC) def. Lexi Donati, 5-7, 6-0, 6-1; McCown (W) def. Molly Somora, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3. Doubles: Jazwinski-McCommon (GC) def. Lydia Kraynak-Holly Vernan, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4; Cox-Krupa (W) def. Lauren Steele-Brittany Foringer, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2.


ä Sharon 3, Mercer 2 —
At Tiger Gymnasium, the host Lady Tigers tallied a 20-25, 25-18, 25-23, 12-25, 15-8 upset.

Sharon (2-9): Jessica Talbert-Kirsch 5 kills, 10 assists; Leah Smith 13 assists; Iman Morgan 9 serving aces; Kristina Jacoway 7 kills, 8 digs; Delisa Smith 6 kills; Tanayja Sanders 5 serving aces, 10 kills; Ger’Brea Peterson 5 digs. Mercer: No stats reported.

JV: Mercer, 2-0.

ä Lakeview 3, Jamestown 0 — At Stoneboro, the host Lady Sailors secured a 25-14-, 25-10, 25-14 sweep.

On  “Dig for a Cure Night,” the Lady Sailors raised $1,800 for the Yolanda G. Barco Oncology Institute of Meadville, Coach Lisa Herrick reported.

Leading Lakeview were Salena Stutzman (20 serving points, 12 digs), Taylor Reed (8 points), Tia Reed (6 points, 5 digs) and Rachel McKean (7 points); Ashley Ray (9 digs); Sam Riddle (10 digs).

JV: Lakeview, 25-22, 25-9.
