Raiders hold lead at Northwest AA Region Tourney

By Lynn Saternow

- — Reynolds coach Casey Taylor had a simple, but fitting comment after the opening night of the Northwest AA Region Wrestling Championships at Sharon High School Friday:

“So far; so good!”

The defending champion Raiders, who are seeking a 17th region crown in school history, jumped into the team lead with 45 points Friday, heading second place Brookville with 35.

But the big points will be scored today in the semifinals. Reynolds and Brookville each advanced 8 matmen into the semis, while Fort LeBoeuf has 6.

“I’m really happy with advancing eight,” said Taylor. “I was really pleased with the effort of all our kids. Everyone by now should be tournament tested and mentally ready to go. That’s what we stressed all week.

“We knew it would be a battle with teams like Brookville and LeBoeuf and Greenville. Saegertown has its studs too.”

The consolation preliminaries will be held at 9 a.m. today, followed by the semis and first-round consys. Consolation finals are set for 3:15 p.m., with parade of champions at 4:45, followed by the finals.

The top three finishers in each weight will advance to state.

Following is a look at the tournament by weight class:

106 – Reynolds’ D-10 champ Gage Bayless rolled into the semis with a decision over familiar foe Abe Guarriello of Fort LeBoeuf, 8-3, and will face Brookville’s Gavin Park. On the other side of the bracket, D-9 winner Ryan Carlson of Brockway tangles with Greenville’s Michael Lineman. Lineman topped Redbank Valley’s Ryan Kube, 8-2.

113 – It’s a rematch of the D-10 semis this morning between Jamestown’s district champ Faris Messai and Reynolds’ Seth Hogue. Messai won by fall. The other side of the bracket pairs Brookville’s sophomore ace Tyler Ortz with Kane’s Austin Woolcock. Woolcock won by forfeit when his opponent Preston Hoover of Mercer didn’t make weight.

120 – Two-time champ Willis Gruver of Redbank Valley won by fall in his opener and faces Bingbong Elizon of Saegertown in the semis. District 10 champ Jarrette Carter of Fort LeBoeuf goes against Brookville’s Cole Aaron.

126 – Reynolds’ district champ Michael Bartolo has a rematch with Fort LeBoeuf’s Tyler Kuzma, whom he beat in overtime last week. Kane’s Cody Blankenship faces Sharon’s Austin Alfreno.

132 – Junior Tyler Vath of Saegertown continues his drive for a third straight region crown when he meets Brockway’s Mason Lindermuth this morning. Brookville’s Dalton Zimmerman faces Conneaut’s Kyle Lukowich in the other semi.

138 – Fort LeBoeuf senior George McGuire won a region title as a freshman, but hasn’t been back to the top of the medal stand since. He’s have Greenville freshman Gavin Wilkerson in the semis and is probably headed for a finals matchup with Brookville’s defending region champ Brock Zacherl. Zacherl takes on Nick Monico of Saegertown.

145 – Defending champ Levi Stoyer of Reynolds decked Grove City’s Jared Sample in the quarterfinals and is most likely headed for a finals pairing with D-9 champ Zach Vroman of Brookville. Vroman nipped Stoyer, 3-2, in an earlier match this season. Stoyer meets James Duffy of Smethport in the semis, while Vroman faces Mitch Bloise of Redbank Valley.

152 – Today’s semis could be two of the closest matches of the day. D-10 champ Robert Boozer of Cochranton meets Fort LeBoeuf’s Brad Malinowski, while District 9 victor Brodie Zacherl of Brookville faces Reynolds’ Mason McCollum. Zacherl nipped McCollum, 3-2, in an earlier dual meeting.

160 – Coudersport’s Kyle Bova moved to 30-0 on the year with an injury default over Reynolds’ Keegan Miller and faces Samuel Colebert of Oswayo Valley. Greenville’s D-10 champ Gage Glaydsz meets Brookville’s Jimmy Miller in the other semi.

170 – Kane’s unbeaten Evan Delong drives for a third region crown as he faces Reynolds’ Mike Millero this morning. On the other side of the bracket, District 10 winner Dakota Geer of Franklin tangles with Anthony Benson of Brockway.

182 – Defending region champ Dylan Reynolds of Saegertown meets a well-known foe when he takes on Greenville’s Justin Reynolds in the semis. Reynolds’ Austin Moffett faces D-9 champ Zachery Bruce (31-0) on the other side of the bracket.

195 – District 9 champ Forest Tuttle of Coudersport lost on opening night, but it was certainly no disgrace when you lose to a defending region champ. Tuttle put up a battle but dropped an 8-6 decision to Corry’s Ryan Morris. Morris faces Marquis Spence of Lakeview this morning, while D-10 champion Garrett Reinwald of Fort LeBoeuf meet’s Alexander Burkhart of Clarion.

220 – District 10 champion Colton Smith of Mercer was pulled from the tournament for undisclosed reasons, but the D-10 contingent is still strong. In fact, all four semifinalists are from District 10. North East’s Andrew Phelps, who was re-entered into the tournament when Smith was out, knocked off D-9 champ Bryce Town of Brookville, 9-7, and faces Reynolds’ Cole Rickert. On the other side of the bracket, Conneaut Area’s Connor Overman faces Jamestown’s Jason Shappee.

285 – Defending region and state champ Sam Breese of Lakeview faces a tough semi match Fort LeBoeuf’s Nate Conti whom he beat last week, 6-3. On the other side of the bracket, Ben Carillo of Redbank Valley meets Jack Karsten of Cameron County.
