Roundup: Hickory girls 17-0; KC, Greenville, Mercer grab region wins

MERCER COUNTY — GIRLS BASKETBALL

ä Hickory 57, Franklin 40 —
At The Castle in Venango County, the visiting Lady Hornets harvested the Region 5-AAA road rout.

Hickory swept the home-and-home regular-season series.

Holly Grober garnered a 12-point, 14-rebound double-double and blocked 4 shots, and Nikki Arbanas added 19 points and a half-dozen steals for Hickory (8-0, 17-0). Also, Nicole LaCava and Brandi Beader evenly divided a dozen rebounds and Beader bucketed 10 points, while Megan Chess dished out 3 assists and Raganne O’Brien added 3 caroms for Lady Hornets’ Head Coach Jeanette Whitehead.

For Franklin (5-3, 10-6), Angelina Starr scored a game-high 23 points, but she was one of only a trio of Lady Knights to enter the scoring column.

ä Mercer 62, Wilmington 46 — In the County Seat, the host Lady M’s manufactured the Region 2-AA win as Alexis Arkwright annexed a game-high 24 points.

Mercer led from the outset: 17-13 at the quarter, 34-26 by the break, and 48-32 through 3 periods.

Arkwright aced a trio of treys for Mercer (5-2, 11-5), while Megan McKinney mustered 16 markers and Alexis Mills 11 for Mercer mentor Aaron Cook. Mercer’s marksmanship from the free-throw line was 11 for 13, led by Arkwright’s 5-for-5 accuracy.

Wilmington (4-4, 10-7) was led by Hannah Drake’s dozen points, while Tessa Sikora and Cassidy Marett evenly divided an additional 22 tallies.

ä Greenville 40, West Middlesex 38 — At Greenville, Cameron Leary’s lay-in proved decisive in the Region 2-AA affair.

The Lady Trojans’ triumph was the product of a 2nd-half rally in which they outscored Middlesex, 24-17 after intermission. Greenville garnered the win despite shooting 8 for 26 from the free-throw line, though Middlesex’s marksmanship was just 7 for 17.

For Greenville (5-3, 8-8) and Head Coach Jennifer Fagley, Michaela Marini mustered a game-high 14 markers. and Leary lent a dozen.

The Ms Reds (2-5, 7-10) were led by Ally Staunch’s 12-point, 17-rebound double-double and Morgan Atterholt’s game-high 19 caroms, while Alyson Pierce provided a handful of assists.

ä Kennedy Catholic 63, Reynolds 22 — At Transfer, the visiting Lady Golden Eagles eased to the Region 1-A road rout.

Taylor Zacherl, Tatum Kress, Taylor Hood and April Bocian bucketed 15, 12, 11 and 10 points, respectively, to key Kennedy Catholic (6-0, 14-2), which outscored Reynolds 53-15 over the game’s final 24 minutes.

Kress completed a 4-assist, 8-rebound, 3-steal line, while Hood handed out 7 assists, hauled down a half-dozen rebounds and had 4 steals. Also, Bocian boarded 6 times and Alivia O’Brien also was credited with 4 steals, 1st-year KC Coach Chris Mele reported.

For Reynolds (3-2, 4-11), Brooke Bresnan bucketed 9.

ä Commodore Perry 56, Jamestown 23 — At “The Fish Tank” in Jamestown, Coach Bob Messina’s visiting Lady Panthers improved to 3-4 in Region 1-A and 10-8 overall with the win over the Lady Muskies (0-6, 0-16).

Emily Kitchen fired in 19 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to record a double-double for CP while Stephanie Vaughn registered 14 points, 3 assists and 3 blocks.

Emily Robinson led Jamestown with 7 points.

ä Rocky Grove 64, Farrell 33 — At The ’Grove, Amber Nerlich netted a game-high 29 points as the Lady Orioles overwhelmed the youthful Lady Steelers in the Region 1-A affair.

Nerlich notched 12 of 22 floor shots, including a handful from beyond the arc. Also for Rocky Grove (3-2, 9-7), Aleece Shiffer scored 15. The Lady Orioles ended 27 for 58 (46.5 percent) from the field.

For Farrell (3-4, 5-12), Kiara Wade was high scorer with 8. Farrell finished 16 for 43 from the floor.

ä Grove City 53, Titusville 26 — At Titusville, the visiting Lady Eagles eased to the Region 5-AAA road rout.

Alexis Deyarmin deposited 10 points to pace Grove City (5-3, 10-6) while Hailey Hall and Brenna Deyarmin evenly split 18 additional points.

Titusville (0-9, 3-14) was led by Jacobs’ 8 points.

ä Brookfield 48, Niles 35 — At Brookfield, the host Lady Warriors’ wire-to-wire win was led by Destiny May’s 13 markers and Danielle DiCristofaro, who dropped in another 11. Also, May mustered a game-high 8 rebounds, DiCristofaro dished out 3 assists, and May and Delaney Saxton divided 6 steals for veteran mentor Shawn Hammond of Brookfield (13-4).

Niles 4-13) was led by Amanda Blank, who bucketed 13 points.

WRESTLING

ä Sharon 38, Hickory 29 —
At Tiger Gymnasium, Sharon improved to 12-5 with the 9 points win over the Hornets.

D.J. Templeton (120), Cory Buchanan (160), Beau Dignall (182) and Brice Laughlin (195) posted pins for Sharon while Troy Hejazi (138) and Jason Clark (145) won via major decision.

For Hickory, John Sims won by tech fall at 170 pounds and Dom Vadala (106), Justin Walter (113), Stanford Dessaw (132) and Noah Bianco (152) picked up wins by decision.

Sharon coach Dave Ciafre said the Slippery Rock makeup match is Wednesday at 6 p.m., followed by a match vs. West Middlesex at 7:30 p.m.

ä Reynolds 65, Cambridge Springs 3 — At “The Spa,” the Raiders rolled over the Blue Devils.

Gage Bayless (106), Seth Hogue (113), Mike Bartolo (126), Joel Leise (132) and Alex DiGregorio (138) registered falls for coach Casey Taylor’s Raiders.

Zach Stafford won the only match via decision for CS at 195 pounds.

ä Maplewood 36, Sharpsville 33 — At Guys Mills, the Tigers edged the Blue Devils (6-10) in a match that featured 8 forfeits.

Austan Szugye (138) had the lone pin for Sharpsville while Andy Ryan (113), P.J. Campoli (182) and Chris Mueller (195) won by decision.

Jacob Parsons (170) had the only fall for Maplewood.

ä Ellwood City 58, West Middlesex 18 — At Ellwood, the host Wolverines’ win was paced by pins from Tyler Alberts (106), Carter MacMurdo (120), Brian McCarthy (132), J.T. Baldelli (170), Brad Grinnen (195) and Mike Sinclair (220).

For Middlesex (2-9), Jeffrey Spencer secured a fall at 285 pounds, while Mitchell Murray (113) mustered a decision, also.

ä Cochranton 39, Lakeview 33 — At Lakeview Wednesday, the visiting Cardinals pulled out the close victory.

For skipper Tom Tingley’s Sailors, pins were recorded by Jake Heim (120), Sam Breese (285) and Owen Clayton (113). Scoring falls for Cochranton were: Nathan Kline (126), Dylan O’Donnell (138) and Jacob yarnell (145).
