Hickory golf teams sweep season-opening mega-matches

---- — Billy Colbert carded a medalist round of 71 Monday afternoon to lead Hickory High’s golf team to a season-opening Region 2 mega-match victory.

At Tam O’Shanter Golf Course, the Colbert-led Hornets harvested 327 strokes to outdistance Sharon (360), West Middlesex (366), Sharpsville (382) and Wilmington (391).

Colbert eagled No. 12, while West Middlesex’s Ryan Dogan drilled an ace on No. 8 Also, Hickory’s Ross Rosati eagled No. 1.

Hickory (5), Sharon (4), West Middlesex (3), Sharpsville (2) and Wilmington (1) earned season-opening points.

Hickory—Colbert 71, Rosati 83, Greg Galbo 86, Nate Mastrian 87.

Sharon—Chris Hartnagle 88, Louis Wareham 89, Carl Carpenter 91, Chris Franek 92.

West Middlesex—Ryan Dogan 88, Chaz Burger 91, Riley Atterholt 92, Jacob Weiser 95.

Sharpsville—Johnny Wolf 89, Micah Smith 94, Zack Pisarcik 96, Justin Morris 103.

ä Meadville mustered 317 strokes to muster the Region 3 season-opening mega-match at Meadville Country Club.

MASH outdistanced Slippery Rock (335), Warren (340), Grove City (360) and Oil City (381).

Warren’s Andrew Gignac garnered a medalist round of 75, 2 strokes better than Grove City’s Matt Gordon, and 3 better than Meadville’s Dalton Zelasco.

Slippery Rock—Sam Isacco, Collin Hyatt 92s, Ken Rall 84, Matt Badger 85.

GIRLS GOLF

Coach Craig Antush’s Hickory High linksters fired a 194 to capture the season-opening Region 2 Mega-Match at Lucky Hills Golf Course in Franklin (hosted by Rocky Grove).

Hickory’s Alena Lancia earned medalist honors with a 45. Reynolds shot a 206, West Middlesex had a 228, Rocky Grove only had 3 girls compete and Grove City had 2 teeing it up.

Reynolds—Izzy Schell 47, Jamie Vamosi 51, Taylor Yahner 53, Taylor DeLong 55.

At Buhl Park, Marissa Works, Rachel Mettee and Anna Derloni swept the singles matches in leading coach Joe Bender’s Lady Hornets to a sweep of the Lady Tigers.

ä Brookfield 3, Beaver Local 2 — In Columbiana County, the visiting Lady Warriors were road warriors, led by a sweep of singles action by Ashley and Autumn Kirila and Alexandra Plyler.

Brookfield (3-0) remained undefeated, while Beaver Local (3-1) lost its initial match of the young season.
