Herald staff

---- — PHILADELPHIA — Wilmington High track star Jon Yohman placed 7th out of 22 competitors in the shot put competition on Friday at the prestigious Penn Relays.

Yohman’s mark was 17.84 meters at the University of Pennsylvania’s Franklin Field, and he became the first athlete from Wilmington High to place at the event.

“We’ve had a few other athletes qualify, but Jon is the first to place,” said Wilmington coach J.R. McFarland. “He is just a great competitor.

“Just to qualify is an honor, but to come down to Philadelphia and place is amazing. It’s a different venue. Everything is run differently than a normal meet. The competition is stiff, and I tip my cap to him. It’s another big meet experience for him.”

Yohman captured gold in the discus and silver in the shot put at last season’s PIAA Track & Field Championships at Shippensburg University, and hopes to grab more gold at the annual event Memorial Day Weekend.
