SHENANGO VALLEY —
On thing has proven true in the long history of The Herald-Tam O’Shanter Junior Golf Tournament: Repeating multiples times is never easy.
So it’s no surprise that the reign of two-time defending champion Billy Colbert is in jeopardy heading into today’s final round of the 2013 tournament at Tam O’Shanter Golf Coruse.
Colbert shot 79 in the opening round and trails Jacob Wilson by two strokes. The two are pulling away from the field as Joseph Faber and Lonnie Schell are the closed competitors at 84.
Colbert is vying for his third title in a row and possibly a fourth next season. There has only been one four-time champ — Michael Klaric III — and two three-time winners — Bobby Thomas and David Chuba.
But only Thomas won it three straight years from 1961-63. Chuba won in 1981, but finished behind Scott Gladysz in 1982, before bouncing back to cop the 1983 and ’84 crowns.
Klaric won his first time at the amazing age of 12 in 2002 and followed up in 2003. But the 2004 tourney was won by Steve Killa, while Ryan Miller grabbed the 2005 title. However, Klaric returned to throne in 2006 and followed up with a fourth win in 2007.
Of course with another 18 holes to go today, anything can happen as pressure builds.
On Thursday, Wilson — a sophomore at Kennedy Cathlic High — shot 40 on the front and 27 on the back. Hickory junior Colbert fired 41-38.
Fourteen players will be back today for the final round. Following are the first round scores and today’s tee times:
