Roundup: Hickory to play for D-10 team title; WM, Sharpsville softball teams win

Coach Casey Runyan’s Hickory High tennis team will compete in the District 10 Team championships today.

The event begins at 9 a.m. at the Pennbriar Athletic Club in Erie.

Hickory and Greenville were co-region champs and played at Buhl Park on Monday and Tuesday in a tiebreaker. Hickory won 4-1. The match started Monday but had to be completed Tuesday due to the weather.

In Class AA at 9 a.m. today, Hickory battles Fairview while Warren takes on Harbor Creek. The championship match is at 2 p.m.

In AAA, Cathedral Prep and McDowell play in the championship match at noon.

SOFTBALL

ä West Middlesex 15, Reynolds 0 —
At Transfer, Jordyn Allen twirled a complete-game 3-hitter with 11 strikeouts and 2 walks in leading coach Nick Donatelli’s Ms. Reds (7-0, 9-2) past the Lady Raiders.

Allen gave up 3 singles to Reynolds’ Casey Rhodes.

Allen was coming off a pair of no-hitters on both Monday and Tuesday — a 2-0 win at Kennedy Catholic Monday and a 15-0 (4 inning) win over Commodore Perry on Tuesday in West Middlesex.

Offensively for WM on Thursday, Allen ripped a double and 2 singles, Olivia Slater had a pair of doubles and a single, Macy Siefert doubled and Megan Hazlett, Noelle Murray and Kayla Ballard had 2 singles each.

Jess Dickson went the distance for Reynolds. She struck out 5 batters, issued no walks and gave up 15 hits.

ä Hickory 10, Conneaut Area 5 — At Linesville, Chelsea Marriott pitched a complete game and went 3-for-4 at the dish with a 2-run homer and 2 runs scored as the Lady Hornets (7-1, 8-1) beat Conneaut Area.

Marriott went the distance with 6 strikeouts, issued no walks and gave up 9 hits.

Also for Hickory, Madison Collier singled and doubled, Hannah Gallagher smacked a solo home run, Sabrina Black went 2-for-4 and Alyssa Kostka was 2-for-4 with 3 RBI and a run scored.

Hickory has belted 21 home runs through 9 games this season reported coach Tanya McClafferty.

For Conneaut, Becca Hazen had 2 singles and Kayla Ordos and Batos both singled and doubled.

Sahara Blair was tagged with the mound loss. She fanned 3 batters, walked 1 and gave up all 10 runs on 14 hits.

ä Grove City 6, Meadville 1 — At Grove City, Maddie Elberty fanned 4, walked 2 and gave up 7 hits as the Lady Eagles (7-7) beat Meadville.

Katie Maine had 2 singles, doubled, drove in a run and scored once, Taylor Shingledecker collected 2 hits, an RBI and 1 run scored, Cassie Feather registered a pair of hits and an RBI, Belle Chiodo had a 2-run single and Jordyn Hesselgesser added an RBI single.

The GC coaching staff also added that the Lady Eagles beat Slippery Rock, 26-3, on Tuesday and lost to Conneaut Area, 5-3, on Monday.

ä Sharpsville 18, Farrell 0 (3 inn.); Sharpsville 17, Farrell 2 (3 inn.) — At South Py Twp., the Blue Darlings (10-4) swept the doubleheader.

In game 1, Abby Piccirilli fired a 1-hitter (single by Farrell’s Jasmine Pegues) with 7 strikeouts and 1 walk.

Offensively for Sharpsville, Eugena Davies ripped 3 doubles, scored twice and drove in 3 runs, Olivia Shuttleworth singled and scored twice, Abby Ferlin doubled, tripled, had 3 rbi and 3 runs scored, Rachel Harenchar singled, hit a sac fly, scored twice and collected 3 RBI, Megan Davis was 2-for-2 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI, Piccirilli singled, scored and drove in a run, Kaylee Scurpa ripped an RBI triple and had 3 runs scored, Brittany Fitzgerald belted a 2-run single and Kaitlyn Falconi singled, tripled, scored 3 times and drove in 3 runs.

˝ In game 2, Ferlin fired a no-hitter with 4 strikeouts and 3 walks.

Davies was 2-for-3 with 2 runs scored, Fitzgerald had an RBI single, Shuttleworth went 3-for-3 with a triple, 3 runs scored and 2 RBI, Ferlin was 2-for-3 with a triple and 2 runs scored, Harenchar had 2 triples, 3 runs scored and 2 RBI, Davis had 2 doubles, 1 run scored and 2 RBI, Scurpa and Leah Larocca both had inside-the-park home runs, Vanessa Patterson singled and scored a run, Madison Sloan was 1-for-2 with 2 runs scored, Falconi singled, scored once and drove in 2 runs and Sydney Flynn ripped a 2-run double.

BASEBALL

ä Cathedral Prep 18, Grove City 1 —
At Memorial Park in Grove City, Carter Cross fired a 3-hitter and helped his cause at the plate with a double and single as the Ramblers, who slugged 14 hits, beat the Eagles.

Also for Cathedral Prep, Ted DeSanti, Charlie Fessler and Justin Perez had 2 hits each and Dillon Wolbert homered and doubled.

Four pitchers split time on the mound for Grove City. Offensively, Jared Sample ripped a pair of doubles, Dustin Maine singled and Matt Gordon had an RBI.

ä Reynolds 6, Mercer 4 — At Veterans Memorial Field in Brandy Springs Park, Mercer, Nick Fuchs, Jack Mahlon and Dustin Reimold combined on a 5-hitter as the Raiders topped the Mustangs.

Fuchs started and went 2 innings with 1 strikeout, 1 walk and gave up no hits and no runs. Mahlon pitched the 3rd inning with 1 strikeout, 2 walks and no runs and no hits. Reimold closed it out with 1 K, 1 walk and gave up all 4 runs on 5 hits.

Offensively for Reynolds, Fuchs had 2 singles and 2 RBI, Mahlon ripped 3 singles and drove in a run, Adam Ballish tallied an RBI triple, Jacob Reimold doubled, singled and drove in a run and Collin Yake added a pair of singlets.

No stats were submitted for Mercer.

ä West Middlesex 14, Jamestown 0 (5 inn.) — At Jamestown, Aaron Webb fired an abbreviated shutout for the Big Reds (9-3).

Christian Porterfield and Dillon Fair both singled and doubled for WM and Trey Staunch ripped 2 singles.

Randall was tagged with the loss for the Muskies. Garrett Morgan led them at the plate with 2 singles.

ä Sharon 9, Wilmington 5 — At Johnny Pepe Field recently, the host Tigers triumphed.

Danny Vanderslice hammered a 3-run home run and Andrew Tomko contributed a 2-run single. Also, Jon Williams whacked 2 hits, as did Zac Meszaros, and Louis Wareham and Isaiah Pinckney produced hits. Jeremy Marangoni, with relief help form Mike Piccirilli and Joey Rahn, earned the win. Marangoni fanned 4 in 5-plus innings.

After allowing 6 runs on 6 hits in 4ê innings Josh Nichols was saddled with the setback for Wilmington. Nate Anthony relieved. Also for the Greyhounds, Bender banged a single and double, Nichols notched 2 hits, and Brumbaugh, Presnar and Gardner garnered base hits.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

ä Farrell 3, Rocky Grove 0 —
At Franklin, Farrell (5-7) cemented a District 10 playoff spot with a 25-21, 25-18, 25-12 sweep of the Orioles.

Farrell stats: Austin Pickens 8 kills; Leon Lewis 6 kills, 5 blocks; Marcus McCoy 9 kills; Anthony Pegues 27 assists, 5 blocks; Jacobi Greene 5 kills, 5 blocks; Tyrone Archie 6 kills.

JV: Farrell, 11-25, 25-22, 15-11.
