Roundup: WM girls beat UC; Sharpsville, KC fall

- — GIRLS BASKETBALL

ä West Middlesex 52, Union City 27 —
At Union City, coach Mike Williams’ Region 1-A Ms. Reds improved to 2-1 with a win over the Lady Bears of Region 4-AA.

Alyson Pierce scored 15 to lead WM, Noelle Murray registered 13 points and Allie Staunch bucketed 10 markers.

WM went 1-1 at its season-opening WM Kiwanis Tournament. They beat Commodore Perry on Friday night and then fell to Cardinal O’Hara (Tonawanda, N.Y.) in the championship game on Saturday.

Toy had 8 points to pace Union City (0-1) in its home- and season-opener and Williams bucketed 7.

ä Cranberry 46, Sharpsville 38 — At Seneca, coach Jeff Hanley’s Lady Blue Devils (1-0) opened the 2013-14 season with a hard-fought 8 points loss to the Lady Berries (3-0).

Sharpsville led 10-8 after the 1st quarter, 22-18 at halftime, but were outscored 14-9 in the 3rd quarter and 14-7 in the 4th.

Emily Anderson recorded a 19-point, 14-rebound double-double for Sharpsville while Madison Sloan scored a dozen points. Also, Madison Przicina dished out 6 assists.

Emily Merryman fired in a trio of treys en route to a game-high 24 points for Cranberry and Julie Swartzfager scored 15.

This is Hanley’s 13th season at Sharpsville and won his 1st-ever PIAA playoff game last season (38-32 over Brookville) as the Lady Blue Devils were led by the school’s all-time leading girls scorer McKenzie Popatak (1,690 points).

Popatak has since graduated, along with point guard Natalie Henwood, Paige Scurpa and Megan Whalen. Also, Megan Davis, the team’s lone senior, will miss the year with a torn ACL that was suffered during volleyball.

Cranberry won the Oil City Tipoff Tourney over the weekend, which included a 70-34 win over Lakeview on Friday night.

ä Neshannock 60, Kennedy Catholic 56 — At Neshannock Twp., coach Chris Mele’s Lady Golden Eagles (2-1) trailed 40-25 at halftime and stormed back in the 2nd half, but the rally fell short against the Lady Lancers (3-0).

Rebekah Kish scored 14 to lead KC and Tatum Kress and Taylor Hood had 13 points each.

Madison McHale rifled in 21 points to lead Neshannock, Tayler Grybowski scored 18 and Cassidy Burrelli added 11 markers.

It was the 1st loss of the young season for KC as they won the Franklin Elks Tipoff Tournament over the weekend, which included an impressive 54-37 win over Franklin for the tourney title on Saturday night.

Neshannock captured the New Castle Tipoff Tourney, which included wins over Imani Christian Academy on Friday and New Castle (45-43) on Saturday.

BOYS BOWLING

ä Lowellville 2376, Brookfield 2068 —
At the BowlaDrome in Struthers Monday, Eddie Harklerod (444), Tyler Rotz (408) and Joey Coppola (385) led the way for Lowellville.

Michael Katko bowled a 359 for the Warriors, Adam Brooks posted a 355 and Bradley Bridge tallied a 282.

ä Lowellville 1669, Brookfield 1477 —
At Struthers, Kathryn Grope rolled a 311 for Lowellville, Deborah Covicchi had a 291 and Brittney Brady bowled a 281.

Jessica Neral (321), Christmas Rowlands (231) and Christine Lowers (228) led the way for Brookfield.
