Raiders win 20th D-10 championship

- — If it’s true that “There’s strength in numbers,” then the Reynolds Raiders should be in good shape at the Northwest Regional Wrestling Championships.

Coach Casey Taylor’s Raiders advanced 13 of 14 wrestlers through the District 10 Class AA Championships Saturday at Sharon High and won the team title with 222 points. Finishing second was Greenville (158), and the Trojans are advancing 10.

The Raiders posted 3 champions, led by 2-time winners Michael Bartolo (126) and Levi Stoyer (145).

Saegertown’s Tyler Vath (132) notched his 3rd straight crown, while adding a 2nd title were Vath’s teammate Dylan Reynolds (182) and Fort LeBoeuf’s George McGuire (138).

First-time champions were: Gage Bayless (106), Reynolds; Faris Messai (113), Jamestown; Jarrette Carter (120) and Garrett Reinwald (195), Fort LeBoeuf; Robert Boozer (152), Cochranton; Gage Gladysz (160), Greenville; Dakota Geer (170), Franklin; Colton Smith (220), Mercer; and Sam Breese (285), Lakeview.

The top 6 in each weight advance to the regional tournament this coming weekend at Sharon.

“We got 13 through and 3 champs and overall the team wrestled solid,” said Taylor. “The guys on this team push each other and try to outdo one another.

“I’m proud of the kids and the 20th title for the program. We try not to emphasize that and if the kids do well as individuals it will take care of itself,” Taylor added.

Following is a look at the tourney finals by weight class:

106 – It was a battle of two talented freshmen in the opening match of the night. Bayless grabbed an early takedown on Greenville’s Michael Lineman and tacked on 2 more later en route to a 6-3 decision. The Raider (36-4) won an early meeting with Lineman (36-5), 6-2.

Other Mercer Countians who qualified for regions are: 3rd,  Hickory’s Dominic Vadala; 4th, Jamestown’s Hunter Goodlin.

113 – Section 3 champ Messai battled back from an early 3-0 deficit to send the match with Mercer’s Preston Hoover (24-9) into overtime. Messai scored a takedown in the sudden-victory period to notch a 5-3 win. Messai (27-4) pinned Section 2 winner Seth Hogue of Reynolds in the semis.

Hogue came back to take 2rd with a 3-0 decision over Greenville’s Jase Paxson. Hickory’s Justin Walter advances in 5th place.

120 – The finals were a rematch of the Section 1 title tilt between Carter (27-8) and Saegertown’s Bingbong Elizon (24-12) and again Carter came out on top, this time by a 3-1 margin.

Reynolds’ Chaise Hauck moved on in 5th place.

126 – It was a rematch of the Section 2 finals here, with defending D-10 champ Bartolo facing Sharon’s Austin Alfreno. Bartolo (31-8), who won last week by decision, jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead and never looked back on his way to pinning Alfreno (24-8) in 3:34.

In the semis, Bartolo edged Fort LeBoeuf’s Tyler Kuzma 4-3 in overtime. Kuzma beat Commodore Perry freshman standout John Mott for 3rd. Greenville’s Brandon Moss took 6th.

132 – Vath (31-6) won his 3rd straight D-10 crown with a 3-0 decision over Kyle Lukowich (28-6) of Conneaut Area. Grove City’s Luke Walter finished 3rd, while Greenville’s Blake Reynolds defeated Reynolds’ Joel Leise, 2-0, for 5th and 6th. Leise beat Reynolds on Friday, 3-2.

138 – This marked the 3rd and final weight without a Mercer County finalist. Fort LeBoeuf’s George McGuire (35-4) won his second D-10 title (the other in 2012) with a last-second takedown to defeat Nick Monico of Saegertown, 4-3.

Greenville freshman Gavin Wilkerson topped defending district champ Adam Fish of Seneca, 4-2, for third place. Reynolds’ Alex DiGregorio finished 6th.

145 – Defending champ Stoyer gave up an early takedown to Conneaut Area’s Taylor Ellis (28-5), but roared back to lead 6-2 after the 1st period. Stoyer (27-3), a returning state place-winner, went on to take a 13-4 major decision for his 2nd crown.

Grove City’s Jared Sample beat Greenville’s Derek Watt, 6-2, for 5th and 6th places.

152 – Seniors Mason McCollum of Reynolds and Boozer went at each other hard from the start, although there was no 1st-period score. Boozer escaped in the 2nd frame for a 1-0 lead. In the third period, he turned McCollum for a pair of back points and a 3-0 lead. McCollum escaped, but Boozer’s takedown gave him a 5-1 front. Boozer (33-4) made it stand up for an 8-4 triumph.

160 – Gladysz took on Harbor Creek senior Matt Newara here, and Gladysz grabbed a takedown with an Oklahoma to lead 2-1 after one. He dominated the 2nd period for a 10-2 front and nearly had a pin when the period ended. Gladysz (38-2) went on to a 14-4 major decision.

“He did a phenomenal job,” said a happy Greenville coach John Reynolds. “He’s a very coachable kid with a very bright future. To win a district championship as a sophomore is special.

“And we’re taking 10 kids to regions, that’s the most by far since I’ve been here and it shows the program is headed in the right direction. Of course next week is the big one and we want to advance as many kids as we can; that’s the plan.”

Grove City’s Kenny Bable finished 3rd and Reynolds’ Kegan Miller 6th.

170 – This was a rematch of last week’s Section 2 finals and it was the same kind of match that Geer won in ultimate tiebreaker over Reynolds’ Mike Millero. This time the regulation bout was tied at 1-1 at the end, same as the previous bout. After no takedown in overtime, the Franklin sophomore (32-1) rode out the 2nd period then escaped in the 3rd before scoring a takedown on a desperation throw attempt by Millero (37-3) for a 4-1 victory.

Zach Miller of Greenville took 3rd.

182 – Defending champ Dylan Reynolds faced Reynolds’ Austin Moffett in a physical clash. Reynolds (34-4) put on a takedown clinic on his way to a 9-3 triumph.

Greenville’s Justin Reynolds pinned Jamestown’s Mohammed Messai in the 3rd-place consy match, while Sharon’s Beau Dignall finished 5th.

195 – It was an overtime battle here between Marquis Spence of Lakeview and Reinwald. The regulation match ended 1-1 and it was 2-2 heading into the ultimate tie-breaker session. Reinwald (36-7) escaped with 10 seconds left for a 3-2 triumph over the Sailor junior (25-6).

Sharpsville’s Chris Mueller placed 4th.

220 – Smith took on Conneaut Area’s Connor Overman, a senior who took up wrestling this year for the first time. With the score tied at 1 in the 3rd period, Smith notched a takedown with a headlock, but Overman reversed to knot the count at 3. Smith gained a penalty point for locked hands, then an escape. The Mustang held on for a 5-3 win.

“We knew he had the talent to do something and that’s what we talked about with him this week,” said Mercer Coach Rick Whenry. “We knew he had a chance to do something at 220. We haven’t had a champ for a while. And Preston Hoover (2nd at 113) had a great tournament too. We’re proud of both of them.”

285 – Unbeaten big man Breese (29-0) didn’t win a district title last year, but he went on to win state. He’s hoping for the double dip this season after defeating Reynolds sophomore Gene Ringer (33-11)  for a 2nd straight win in a finals bout. Last week he pinned Ringer, but this one went the distance with Breese winning 7-3.

“He wrestled a good tournament even though he’s been a little bit sick this week,” said Lakeview mentor Tom Tingley. “He beat (Fort LeBoeuf’s) Nate Conti in the semis — and he’s ranked third in the state. And Ringer is a good wrestler too.

“This was his first district title so he has that monkey off his back. Now it’s on to regions and state.”
