Reynolds High star Austin Matthews put on a strong showing in the annual Dapper Dan Wrestling Classic Sunday at the University of Pittsburgh.
Matthews, who recently won the PIAA Class AA title and was a 4-time state place-winner, dominated 4-time Minnesota state champ Jake Short, 8-2, in the 152-pound match. However, the USA squad edged the Pennsylvania team, 22-18. In the preliminary match, the WPIAL All-Stars beat Virginia, 29-18.
Matthews finished his career at Reynolds with a 184-17 record. Short had a career mark of 237-20 in Minnesota.
Zain Retherford (138) of Benton was named Outstanding Wrestler for Team Pa., while Zachary Beard (170) of Oklahoma was OW for Team USA.
