MERCER COUNTY —
Four Mercer County high school basketball teams will continue their quests for state honors Tuesday and Wednesday.
On Tuesday, the Class AA Sharpsville Blue Darlings of coach Jeff Hanley will face WPIAL third-place finisher Burrell at 6 p.m. at Slippery Rock University. Sharpsville (18-8) is coming off a 38-32 win over Brookville, while Burrell (23-3) toppled Belwood Antis, 65-46.
Three games are slated Wednesday with a doubleheader involving local squads at Clarion University.
Kennedy Catholic girls kick off the action with a Class A contest against District 9 runner-up Port Allegany at 6 p.m. Coach Tom Burns’ Lady Golden Eagles (23-2) rolled over North Catholic, 45-36, in their PIAA opener Saturday, while the Lady Gators (22-4) beat Penns Manor, 52-45.
In the nightcap at Clarion, the West Middlesex Big Reds of Coach Chad Mild will meet Bishop McCort. The District 10 AA champion Big Reds (23-3) are coming off a thrilling 55-50 overtime win over Jeannette. McCort (19-8), the third place team out of District 6, downed Burrell, 62-43, last weekend.
The other local team set for Wednesday is the high-flying Lakeview Sailors, who last weekend won their first-ever PIAA playoff game, beating Quaker Valley, 44-40. The Sailors of coach Gary Burke will play at 7:30 p.m. at Sharon High School against Greensburg Central Catholic. Greensburg (23-2), the 6th place finisher out of the WPIAL. GCC turned back Penn Cambria, 66-56, on Saturday.
