Roundup: Trojans top GC; Steelers edge Sharpsville; Tigers, Hounds, Hornets roll

Herald staff

---- — The midway point of the regular season shows where much of the power lies and  the local teams with the best shots at reaching the District 10 playoffs.

In Region 3-AA action, Greenville is the only unbeaten club after a 34-13 win over Grove City Friday. In other 3-AA play, Sharon rocked Reynolds, 32-7; Hickory mauled Titusville, 70-13; and Wilmington beat Saegertown, 49-0.

In Region 1-A, while West Middlesex was edging Mercer for the lead in the division, Farrell pulled out a tough 7-6 win over Sharpsville.

In play today, Lakeview is at Kennedy Catholic at noon, while Brookfield is on the road to Warren JFK tonight.

ä Greenville 34, Grove City 13 — At Grove City, the Trojans of coach Brian Herrick continued to roll against Region 3-AA competition and remained unbeaten on the season.

Greenville (4-0 Region 3-AA, 5-0 overall) has its sights locked on the region crown and the top seed in the District 10 playoffs. Meanwhile, Grove City has its back against the wall with a 2-2 league mark (3-2 overall).

For a second straight year, Greenville’s talented Tyler Fattman opened the game against Grove City by returning the opening kickoff for a touchdown. This time he went 92 yards to open the contest on a positive note for the Trojans. The point after failed, but Greenville had a lead it would never reliquish.

Later in the period, Nick Black hit paydirt on a 21-yard sprint and Casey Eells connected on the point after. Grove City cut the lead to 13-6 when Foster Reznor scored on a 17-yard run, a score that held until the intermission.

In the third period, the Trojans used some trickery. Fattman carried the ball on a fake punt and went 43 yards for a score. Greenville widened the margin when Trey VanAken ripped off a 58-yard scoring run. Eells converted after both scores.

Reznor scored again for GC on a 1-yard run and Dylan Nelson’s point-after kick cut the lead to 27-13. However that was the end of the scoring for the home team, while Greenville tacked on another tally on a 3-yard run by Black.

Fattman finished with 12 carries for 139 yards, while VanAken gained 115 yards on 13 totes. For Grove City, Reznor led the ground attack with 103 yards on 20 carries.

The Trojans — who have already knocked off other top region contenders Hickory, Sharon and Grove City — will get a little breather as they host league foe Titusville, which has been rolled over by most other clubs this campaign. Grove City will try to bounce back at home to Saegertown, another lower level region club.

ä Sharon 32, Reynolds 7 — At Transfer, Carnell Hawkins rushed for 157 yards and scored all 5 touchdowns for the Tigers (3-1, 3-2) as Sharon beat the Raiders (2-2, 3-2) in a key Region 3-AA clash and Jim Wildman got win No. 211 to surpass longtime former Farrell coach Lou Falconi (210).

Sharon went up 7-0 in the 1st quarter on a 1-yard touchdown run by Hawkins and Evan Gill’s extra-point kick.

The Tigers extended their lead to 14-0 in the 2nd quarter on a 19-yard touchdown pass from Andrew Tomko to Hawkins and Gill’s PAT.

Sharon took a 20-0 lead into halftime following a 45-yard run by Hawkins. The extra-point attempt failed.

The Tigers extended their lead to 26-0 early in the 3rd quarter on an 85-yard kickoff return by Hawkins. The 2-point conversion pass failed.

Reynolds made it 26-7 in the 3rd on a 57-yard run by Mike Millero and Michael Ryhal’s PAT.

Sharon closed out the scoring late in the 3rd quarter on a 27-yard run by Hawkins. The extra-point attempt was blocked.

Hawkins rushed for 157 on 17 carries and Tomko was 5-of-8 for 85 yards.

Miller led Reynolds with 136 yards on 21 carries.

ä Farrell 7, Sharpsville 6 — At Sharpsville, it was a battle of two of the top  District 10 A teams over the past several years. But while the two clubs have won the last 5 D-10 titles between them (Farrell in 2008-09-10 and Sharpsville 2011-12) the two local teams right now are just concerned with getting back to the playoffs.

It was a defensive struggle Friday at The Pines, and it was fitting that it was a big defensive effort by Farrell that saved the game.

Farrell carried a 7-0 lead into the fourth period. But Sharpsville scored on a 2-yard run by Ben BuCher on the first play of the fourth quarter and went for a 2-point conversion. But the Steelers defense stiffened and kept the Blue Devils out of the end zone.

Late in the game Sharpsville threatened, but Steeler Malik Graham came up with an interception at the 10-yard line.

Farrell (2-1 in Region 1-A, 4-1 overall) built a 7-0 lead in the second period on a 30-yard pass from Rob Guelledge to Austin Pickens. Pickens kicked the point after.

For Sharpsville (2-2, 3-2), Tyler Wansack picked up 101 yards on 19 carries to lead all rushers.

“We gutted it out,” said Farrell coach Jarrett Samuels. “It was a huge win for us against a very tough Sharpsville team. We knew they were going to be tough and haven’t lost a home game in a long time, so to go over there and win was huge. What a battle it was.

“Our offense struggled, but we’ve got to clean that up as coaches. Our defense carried us. They bent but didn’t break. I’ve never been more proud of our kids as I was tonight. My hats off to Sharpsville, but we were able to gut it out and withstand all their rallies.”

ä Wilmington 49, Saegertown 0 — At Saegertown, it was no contest as the Hounds of coach Terry Verrelli dominated on both sides of the ball. While rolling up a total of 496 yards on offense, the Hounds Hammer defense yielded only 48 to the lowly Panthers.

Wilmington kept alive it’s playoff hopes by evening its Region 3-AA record to 2-2 (3-2 overall). Saegertown fell to 0-4, 0-5.

Spencer DeMedal scored a pair of TDs for the winners on runs of 4 and 7 yards, while Marc Peoples also hit paydirt twice on a pair of passes from Cody Llewellyn good for 63 and 13 yards. Dwight Scott scored on a 4-yard burst, while Josiah Bloise scored on a 63-yard punt return and Dom Gargiulo on a fumble recovery in the end zone. The Hounds picked up a safety in the final frame when Cole Cameron notched a sack in the end zone. Kyler Lum nailed 4 PAT kicks and James Gardner one.

Scott led the ground attack with 107 yards on only 4 carries.

ä Hickory 70, Titusville 13 — At Hornet Stadium coach Bill Brest’s Hickory High Hornets (3-1, 4-1) rumbled for 623 yards in total offense as they routed the winless Rockets (0-4, 0-5) in Region 3-AA play.

Hickory led 28-0 after the opening quarter, 57-0 at halftime and cruised to the easy win.

Hickory starting quarterback Matt Voytik was 8-of-9 for 247 yards with 4 touchdowns and 1 pick and Nick Cannone was 4-of-5 for 56 yards and 1 TD.

Voytik fired TD passes to Andrew Pryts (10 yards), DeQuan Lewis (80 yards), Anthony Cannone (66) and Davon Tindall (10). Nick Cannone’s scoring strike was to Joey DeJulia (54 yards).

Lewis also scored on a 63-yard run, Tindall had a 5-yard TD run, Kenny Ezi-Ashi returned a punt 57 yards for a score, Charles Carr broke loose for an 88-yard TD run and Nick Cannone notched a 9-yard scoring run.

Tyler Sellers rushed for 123 yards on only 7 carries for the Hornets and Anthony Cannone hauled in 4 catches for 103 yards.

Titusville was led by quarterback Todd Brown, who fired an 89-yard touchdown pass to Brady Corklin and scored on a 3-yard quarterback keeper.
