Roundup: Sailors top KC; Brookfield rallies to beat JFK

---- — Blake Reddick rambled for 265 yards rushing and 4 touchdowns Saturday afternoon, leading Lakeview High football team to a 42-6 District 10 Region 1-A rout of Kennedy Catholic.

The Sailors’ senior sprinter, who now has 1,020 yards this season, scored on 17-, 51-, 40- and 52-yard 1st-half runs en route to a 15-carry, 250-yard performance. He carried the ball just once as Lakeview led 42-0 at intermission of the matinee at Butala Stadium.

Also for the Sailors (2-1, 4-1) of skipper Dan York, quarterback Zach Bigley broke loose for a 35-yard scoring sprint and tossed a 31-yard TD to Zach VanDusen. The latter also converted all 6 of his PAT attempts.

Coming off its lone loss, Lakeview accumulated 395 total yards, including 364 rushing, averaging 10.1 yards per play. Defensively the Sailors sacked Kennedy QB Kahliq Ragster 3 times and Marquis Spence picked off a pass.

The lone score for Kennedy Catholic (0-4, 0-5) was the combination of Ragster and Tyrell Adkins, as they collaborated on a 93-yard pitch-and-catch with 3:02 remaining.

Ragster, running out of spread-option offense, completed 5 of 11 passes for 168 yards, including a 55-yard 1st-half strike to Carmen Schuville. However KC committed a trio of turnovers and amassed only 2 first downs. — By Ed Farrell, Herald assistant sports editor.

ä Brookfield 28, Warren JFK 14 — At Warren G. Harding High’s Mollenkopf Stadium Saturday night, the Warriors (4-1) scored 28 unanswered points as they rallied to beat the Eagles (1-4).

JFK took a 7-0 lead in the 1st quarter on a 78-yard TD run by quarterback Mike Roscoe and Eric Bofenkamp booted the PAT.

The Eagles increased their lead to 14-0 in the 2nd quarter on a 75-yard TD pass from Roscoe to Chad Zallow. Bofenkamp added the extra-point.

Brookfield cut the lead in half on a 27-yard TD pass from Augustus Necastro to Kasey Tingler. Tingler tacked on the PAT to make it 14-7, which is where the score stood at the break.

Brookfield tied the game at 14-all in the 3rd quarter on a 6-yard run by Joe Clark and Tingler’s PAT. Clark would then score on a 9-yard run to give the Warriors a 21-14 advantage.

Brookfield made it 28-14 in the 4th quarter when Necastro and Tingler hooked up for another TD pass (13 yards).

Clark carried the ball 37 times for 171 yards. Necastro finished 11-of-16 for 210 yards with the 2 TDs and 1 pick.

The Brookfield defense sacked Roscoe 6 times with Jamar Tarver recording 2è sacks. Caleb Hunkus had an interception for the Warriors.

For Warren JFK, Roscoe was 14-of-22 for 245 yards and led his team in rushing with 62 yards on 13 carries. Chad Zallow caught 4 passes for 121 yards. — Stats submitted by Ed Farrell, Herald assistant sports editor.

CROSS COUNTRY

Cochranton Invitational


The West Middlesex girls captured the team title on Saturday and Big Reds’ boys finished 2nd at the 23rd annual Cardinal Invitational at Cochranton High School.

The WM girls had 72, followed by Hickory (91), Meadville (103), Mercyhurst Prep (119), Cambridge Springs (131), Cranberry (219), Commodore Perry (236), Conneaut Area (240), Sharpsville (259), Franklin (277) and Central Tech (333). A total of 19 schools competed.

Kristen White clocked in at 19:32 to finish 1st overall for WM and Chloe Tyillian was 3rd (19:50). Also, Allyson Pierce was 13th, Anna Zrile placed 23rd, Jordan Aubel was 32nd, Sophia Kachulis took 34th and Helena Zrile was 45th.

Saegertown captured the boys team title with 43, followed by WM (109), Seneca (128), Mercyhurst Prep (146), Hickory (190), Commodore Perry (197), Cochranton (202), Cambridge Springs (232), Cranberry (267) and Meadville (283).

Levi Canon led the way for WM by placing 8th in 17:10. Brett Kirk finished 22nd, Jared Germani was 23rd, Isaac Williams placed 26th, Dylan Long was 30th, Jacob Unverdorben took 39th and Adam Dale was 72nd.

“Our kids did a tremendous job, especially with it being Homecoming weekend,” said WM coach Bob Morris. “I’m happy for our team and all the teams from Mercer County.”

VOLLEYBALL

ä Brookfield 2, Mathews 0; Mineral Ridge 2, Brookfield 0 —
At Brookfield, the Lady Warriors (8-10) went 1-1 in the tri-match. Brookfield beat Mathews, 25-20, 25-9, and fell to Mineral Ridge, 25-16, 25-14.

Delaney Saxton had 9 points (4 aces), 8 kills and 5 digs for Brookfield vs. Mathews. Also, Madison Bonekovic had 12 digs, Caitlyn Hackett posted 6 kills, Katie Bender registered 16 assists and Brooke Hiner collected 10 points.

Against Mineral Ridge, Saxton notched 4 kills and 13 digs, Bonekovic had 17 digs and Bender handed out 8 assists.
