Roundup: 16th Buhl Farm Tennis Invitational is Wednesday

---- — The 16th annual Buhl Farm Tennis Invitational will be held Wednesday at Buhl Park courts, involving 9 teams.

The event, which begins at 8:30 a.m., features teams from the former Mercer County Athletic Conference — Greenville, Grove City, Hickory, Kennedy Catholic, Sharon and Wilmington — as well as Warren, Oil City and Franklin.

The daylong tourney includes 7 divisions of play. Individual champions and runners-up will be crowned and a team championship will be awarded.

Sue McLaughlin, Buhl Farm Park tennis director, is in charge of the tournament.

GIRLS GOLF

Region 1 Mega-Match


Hickory, which wrapped up the Region 1 title last week, went a perfect 8-for-8 in mega-matches on Monday by winning at Deer Creek Golf Course near Hubbard.

Hickory won with 184 strokes, followed by Reynolds (197), Rocky Grove (217) and West Middlesex (236).

Grove City’s Fontaine McFeaters, competing as an independent, earned medalist honors by firing a 40. Alena Lancia shot a 43 for Hickory, Izzy Schell had a 45 for Reynolds and Becca Fithian led WM with a 48.

Hickory faces Region 2 champion Villa Maria for the District 10 Class AA championship at 10 a.m. Saturday at Riverside Golf Club in Cambridge Springs.

At Cross Creek Resort, Titusville, the host Rockets defeated both Slippery Rock and Grove City (10-7), led by medalist Matt McCord’s round of 72.

For Mercer (8-3 region, 12-4 overall) and mentor Dick Griffith, the regular season ended, with the Tam O’Shanter Invitational remaining.

At Forker Field, Nick Tantuo, assisted by Zack Walters, scored the lone goal with approximately 15 minutes remaining in the match.

For Hickory (7-3-1), goalkeeper Donté Green made 15 saves. He was fronted by defenders Jake Andrejewski, Justin Peidle, Noah Cole and Matt Costello.

Grove City goalkeeper Jedd Grimm made 10 saves.
