Roundup: Reynolds, WM, Wilmington track teams sweep

ä Reynolds 122, Farrell 27 —
At Transfer, the host Raiders rolled, led by hurdler Levi Stoyer’s sweep, versatile Ryan Sherbondy (800, long jump, 4x1 relay leg), and jumper Corey Woods’ wins (high, triple).

For Farrell, Gavins garnered a sweep of the 100- and 200-meter dashes.

ä Wilmington 117, Kennedy Catholic 7 — At New Wilmington, Dwight Scott captured the 100 (11.8), 200 (23.7) and 400 (54.1) and ran on the winning 1600 relay team (3:52.7) as the Hounds howled.

Slavi Pontius (hurdles, pole vault), Jared Thomas-Masters (800, 1600, 3200 relay) and Perrine (400 relay, long and triple jumps) were triple-event winners for Wilmington.

Also, Jon Yohman yanked a 60-foot, 7-inch shot put.

Jacob Feeney was the lone winner for Kennedy Catholic in the high jump (5-4).

ä Hickory 111, Slippery Rock 39 — At Hornet Stadium, host Hickory (6-0) harvested the region crown, led by middle-distance standout Kevin Jancsar, jumper Shane Beatty, sprinter DeShawn Coleman, versatile Matt Voytik, and distance aces Derek Work and Mark Wagner, as well as sprinter Markus Schumacher.

Also, Luke Lewis launched a 56-foot, 1-inch shot put.

Hickory coaches noted that the boys’ title, coupled with the girls’ co-championship, is the first time since 1993 that Hickory posted a single-season sweep of championships. 

ä West Middlesex 106, Lakeview 44 — At West Middlesex, Clay Allen, Jeremy Jancso and Luke Patten were triple-event winners for the Big Reds (6-0, 7-0) of coach Ed Pikna. Allen, Jancso and Patten all ran on the winning 400-meter relay team (45.8). Allen also won the 100 and 200, Jancso captured the long and high jumps and Patten copped the triple jump and pole vault.

Blake Reddick and Billy Kinsey both ran on the 1st-place 4x4 and 4x8 relay teams, while Reddick also copped the 400 and Kinsey the 800. Also, Connor Stankovich contributed to a pair of winning relays for the Sailors (3-1, 7-1).

ä Greenville 77, Sharon 61 — At Crowther Track, Greenville, Matt Hecking copped the 800 in 2:02.6 and ran the anchor leg on the 3200 relay team (10:15) as the Trojans topped the Tigers.

Wayna Smith-Austin captured the 100 (11.5) and 200 (23.05) for Sharon and Jonathan Jacoway copped the long (19-11 1/4) and high (6-3) jumps.

GIRLS TRACK & FIELD

ä Reynolds 108, Farrell 29 —
At Transfer, Brooke Bresnan swept the hurdles and added a win in the javelin, while Candi Arnold annexed a sweep of the 800-, 1600- and 3200-meter runs, and Natasha Pacifico produced a pair in the long jump and pole vault.

For Farrell, Garner garnered a win in the 100, and lent a leg to the Lady Steelers’ winning sprint-relay quartet.

ä Wilmington 133, Kennedy Catholic 8 — At New Wilmington, Rikki Brumbaugh and Tess Sikora each captured wins in 4 events as the Lady Hounds topped KC. Brumbaugh copped the 800, 1600 and ran on the 1st-place 1600- and 3200-meter relay squads. Sikora copped the 200 and swept the jumps.

Also for Wilmington, Sarah Schwenke took 1st in the 100 hurdles, pole vault and ran the anchor leg on the 400 relay team while Allison Baldwin took top honors in the 100, 400 and 1600 relay.

ä West Middlesex 89, Lakeview 61 — At West Middlesex, the host Ms. Reds (5-1, 6-1) rolled, led by hurdler Kelsey Murray, thrower Rachel DeMaria, and distance ace Kristen White, all of whom posted sweeps.

Jumper Courtney King, sprinter Taylor Reed, and middle-distance standout Marla Holland (sprint- and mile-relays) led Lakeview (6-1).

ä Hickory 109, Slippery Rock 41 — At Hornet Stadium, the host Lady Hornets (4-0-1) earned a regional co-championship, sharing it with Grove City.

Versatile Jenna Placzek, sprinter Nikki Arbanas, distance ace Lexi Bible, thrower Sophia Fustos, and sprinter-jumper Morgan Pellis led Hickory.

ä Greenville 92, Sharon 50 — At Crowther Track, Greenville, Molly Montalvo captured the shot put (33-3) and discus (105-9) while Sharon’s 1600 relay team broke a school record of 4:09 that dated back 28 years (1985).

Leona Bell, Jessica Talbert-Kirsch, Zhenea Davis and Xsila Powell clocked in at 4:04.26 to set the record. Talbert-Kirsch and Davis also ran on the winning 3200 relay squad while Davis won the 400 and Talbert-Kirsch captured the 800.

SOFTBALL

ä West Middlesex 13, Commodore Perry 1 —
At Sheakleyville, Jordyn Allen fired a complete-game 3-hitter and went 4-for-5 with 4 RBI at the plate in leading coach Gene Rubeo’s Ms. Reds (4-1, 6-3) past CP.

Allen struck out 11 batters, walked 3 and only gave up 3 singles on the mound and had 2 doubles and 2 singles at the dish. Also for WM, Taylor Gilliland tripled ad drove in 3 runs, Randi McCullough doubled and singled and Aly Andrusky added 2 singles and 3 RBI.

Emily Kitchen was tagged with the loss for the Lady Panthers. She fanned 3, walked 8 and gave up 10 hits.

ä Sharon 2, Mercer 1 — At Wengler Field, the host Lady Tigers triumphed, as Gabby Gadola garnered a complete-game 3-hitter, striking out 6 and walking only 1.

Also for Sharon (3-3, 7-5), Kristina Jacoway and Mallory Torr tattooed a pair of singles, and Aubriana Dellibovi also singled.

Melissa Shoemaker suffered the setback for Mercer, though yielding only a handful of hits, fanning 4 and walking 1 in 6 stanzas.

ä Brookfield 3, Campbell Memorial 1 — At Brookfield Twp. Park, the host Lady Warriors (9-3) won, as winning hurler Alicia Quinlan KO’d 14 without walking a hitter in firing a complete-game 4-hitter. Also for Brookfield, Lyndsey Berecek singled, doubled, and pilfered a pair of bases, and Hailey Hogue had a 2-run two-bagger.

BASEBALL

ä Reynolds 6, Commodore Perry 4 —
At Sheakleyville, Reynolds’ Zack Mahlon outdueled Commodore Perry counterpart Matt Jones.

Mahlon mustered 6 strikeouts and scattered 8 hits in a route-going performance, walking 2 and hitting a batter. Jones also allowed 8 hits, but whiffed 10, walked 3 and plunked a pair of batters.

For Reynolds (3-6, 4-6), Neal Engstrom ended with 3 hits, including a double, and tallied a trio of runs, while Paul Torok tagged 2 hits and scored.

ä Sharon 11, Mercer 2 — At Veteran’s Field at Brandy Springs Park, Mercer, Tigers’ twirler Justin Stefanowicz struck out 6 in a complete-game outing in which he needed only 80 pitches. He walked 3 and scattered a handful of hits.

Also for Sharon, Nick Carlo and Cody Frazier fashioned 3 and 2 hits, respectively, Mike Songer and Josh Nichols notched two-baggers, and Daniel Vanderslice singled home a run in Sharon’s 4-run 1st frame.

For Mercer, Jonathan Scheidhauer suffered the setback, permitting 6 runs on 7 hits and 2 walks in 5 frames. Landon Glass and Ryan Thorn relieved. Also, Cody Blose banged a double and hammered a home run to account for the Mustangs’ pair of ribbies, and Logan Clarke collected a pair of hits.

ä West Middlesex 6, Wilmington 4 — At West Middlesex, Mike Ginther fired a 6-hitter over 6 innings with 8 strikeouts and 3 walks as the Big Reds (5-4) edged the ’Hounds.

Mark Colella pitched the 7th inning to earn the save. Aaron Webb led Middlesex at the plate with a pair of singles.

T. Bumgardner suffered the loss for Wilmington. At the plate, Nate Anthony singled and doubled, Smith was 2-for-4 and R. Bumgardner singled and doubled.

ä Kennedy Catholic 6, Jamestown 0 — At Jamestown, moundsman Scott Moore was masterful, mustering 14 strikeouts of the Muskies. He yielded just 2 hits.

Also keying Kennedy was Jacob Leipheimer, who lent 3 hits for the Golden Eagles.

BOYS TENNIS

ä Hickory 4, Grove City 1 —
At Grove City, the visiting Hornets harvested the region championship.

For Hickory (8-0, 9-2), John Smaltz and Michael Funera claimed singles wins, as did the doubles duos of Nick Trochko-Nelson Murphy and Stephen Prochko-Zach Walter.

Matt Welker won at 1st singles for Grove City (6-2, 13-2).
