Laurel captures team title at Tamie Invitational

---- — Paced by 3rd-place finisher Evan Long, Laurel outlasted the 31-team field during Thursday’s 32nd annual Tam O’Shanter Golf Invitational.

The Spartans’ 308 strokes bested Titusville (316), Mercyhurst Prep and Butler (322) and Elk County Catholic (328).

Mercer was the highest-placing Mercer County contingent, tying with Slippery Rock (334) for 8th. Mercer’s Nate Guiler and Mark Peters produced 76s to share in a 4-way deadlock for 5th place.

Cambridge Springs’ Trevor Rodgers’ round of 70 edged Mercyhurst Prep’s Ryan Matlock by a scant stroke for medalist laurels, while Long and Hickory’s Billy Colbert carded 74s.

Grove City’s Matt Gordon, Lakeview’s Chris Palutro and Kennedy Catholic’s Paul Spondike, and Reynolds’ Jacob Reimold recorded respective rounds of 77, 78, 78 and 79.

ä Hickory 4, Grove City 1 —
At Hornet Stadium, Sara Suler buried a pair of goals as the Lady Hornets improved to 6-0 in Region 2 and 11-1 overall.

Lauren Bell and Isabella Spadafora had the other goals for Hickory. Jackie White notched 2 assists and Bell was credited with a helper. Morgan McBride made 6 saves in goal.

Kalie Davis had the lone goal for GC off an assist from Julie DiStasi. Olivia Andrews registered 19 saves between the pipes for the Lady Eagles.

ä Sharpsville 4, West Middlesex 3 — At West Middlesex, Aislinn Frazer and Rose Stoyer had 2 goals each as the Blue Darlings (1-5, 2-10) beat WM. Stoyer, Juliana Sickafus and Ashley Hall had assists and Rachel Toy made a dozen saves in goal for Sharpsville.

Kayla Ballard scored 2 goals for the Ms. Reds and Kaitlin Beck had the other.

ä Grove City 4, Sharon 0 —
At Grove City Wednesday, the Eagles bounced back from a recent loss to Hickory and blanked the visiting Tigers.

With 18 minutes  left in the 1st half Riley Keffer sent a high cross that Peter Conley headed into the net for the 1st score. In the 2nd half. Cole Latimer found the back of the net off a cross from Ethan Kellett; with 1:30 left, Ethan Kellet, off a pass from Latimer, scored; at 1:01, Latimer was fouled in the box and nailed the PK.

 Sharon’s Joey Zajac kept pressure on the Eagles’ goalkeeper Jed Grimm, but Grimm denied his shots. Grove City had 41 attacks, 29 shots (8 on goal), 4 corner kicks and 4 fouls. Sharon had 18 attacks, 9 shots (7 on goal) 4 corner Kicks and 6 fouls resulting in 1 yellow.

ä Mercer 2, Kennedy Catholic 1 — At Lamor Road, Mercer Wednesday night, the host Mustangs dominated the 2nd half to grab the victory.

 KC (5-6-1) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 1st half on a goal by Josh Repas off an assist by Mike Thomas. But the Mustangs rallied in the 2nd half. No stats were reported by Mercer.

ä West Middlesex 3, Commodore Perry 0 —
At West Middlesex, the Ms. Reds improved to a perfect 8-0 in Region 1 and 10-0 overall.
