Roundup: WM sweeps team titles at Big Red Relays

---- — The West Middlesex boys and girls cross country teams captured the team titles Saturday at the 4th annual Big Red Relays in West Middlesex.

Coach Bob Morris’ Ms. Reds won with 15 points, followed by New Castle (27), Sharon (33) and Maplewood (36).

Kristen White, Allyson Pierce and Chloe Tyillian clocked in at a meet-record 18:48 to finish 1st overall. They shattered the previous record of 19:27 set by Tyillian, Shelby Pontera and Kelsey Murray in 2011.

New Castle’s K. Seth, A. Lansdowne and C. Anamo finished 2nd in 19:42. Jordan Aubel, Anna Zrile and Sophia Kachulis were 4th for West Middlesex in 20:16.

J. Anderson, Breanna Roys and Xsila Powell placed 5th for Sharon, clocking in at 20:29.

˝ The WM boys won with 18 points, followed by New Castle (21), Cochranton (36), Maplewood (45) and Sharon (60).

New Castle’s Trevor Blackwell, Mike Mazzanti and Chris Mazzanti finished 1st overall in the boys race with 15:41.53. That time edged the former meet record of 15:42 in 2011 by New Castle’s Blackwell, M. Mazzanti and K. Rice.

Levi Canon, Brett Kirk and Isaac Williams teamed up to finish 2nd for West Middlesex in 16:04.31. David Johnson, Dylan Long and Jared Germani placed 4th for WM (16:28.12).

I. Charez, S. Greenawalt and M. Dilts placed 8th for Sharon in 17:31.36.

“The relays give the kids an excellent opportunity to do some speedwork under race conditions,” said Morris. “We would like to thank the teams involved and the parents organization for their excellent effort and all of the school personnel that helped to make this a quality event for the athletes.”

Team Championships


The Hickory girls suffered a 341-383 loss to Villa Maria on Saturday in the D-10 AA Team Championships at Riverside Golf Club in Cambridge Springs.

Alena Lancia fired an 85 to lead the way for the Lady Hornets, the Region 1 champions. Abby Hearns shot an 87, Kristina David carded a 98 and Ashley Addicott had a 113.

Lia Fatica earned medalist honors for Region 2 champ Villa Maria with an 80. She was followed by Ann Ciachinni (85), Andrea McCormick (87) and Emily Fessler (89).

“I’m real proud of the efforts of my kids,” said Hickory coach Craig Antush. “When you play Villa, you really have to play flawless golf. They have a good chance of winning states.”

The District 10 Individual Championships are Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Riverside Golf Club.

At the Country Club of Meadville Saturday, Region 5 champion Titusville captured the district crown with a 338.

Region 6 champ Harbor Creek (353) was 2nd, followed by Region 2 champion Hickory (365) and Region 4 titlist Saegertown (388). Kennedy Catholic (Region 1) pulled out of the tourney.

For Hickory, Billy Colbert led the way by firing a 75. He shared medalist honors with Titusville’s Eric Maginnis. Ross Rosati had a 91 for the Hornets, Nate Mastrian shot a 95 and Greg Galbo had a 103.

BOYS SOCCER

ä Kennedy Catholic 7, Redbank Valley 0 —
At Butala Stadium in Hermitage, Ethan Feldmiller notched a hat trick as the Golden Eagles shut out Redbank Valley.

Josh Repas, Mike Thomas, Guillermo Quinones and Anthony Panarello had the other goals for Kennedy Catholic. Repas also was credited with an assist.

ä Hickory 8, Strong Vincent 1 — At Hornet Stadium, Hickory (8-2-2) exploded for 7 second-half goals as they routed the Colonels.

Evan Montgomery and Zack Walters both had hat tricks for the Hornets. Coulter Bishop and Dustin Peidle had the other goals.

Jacob Andrzejewski and Shaun McGowan had 2 assists each for Hickory and Nick Tantuo, Brady Leunis and Hayden Pozega were all credited with 1 helper each. Donte Green registered 7 saves in goal to pick up the win for the Hornets.

Cris Linderman posted the lone goal for Strong Vincent off an assist from Timothy Baffie.

JV: 0-0 tie.

ä Conneaut Area 1, Grove City 0 — At Linesville High School, the Eagles dropped a hard-fought match to Conneaut Area.

Mark McLean notched the only goal of the match 20 minutes into the 1st half on a pass from Tyler Bone.

GC fired 24 shots on goal and 11 corner kicks. Conneaut Area only had 4 shots on goal and 1 corner kick.

ä Redbank Valley 3, Kennedy Catholic 1 —
At Butala Stadium, the Lady Bulldogs posted the win.

KC’s goal was scored when Angelica Scoccia fired a shot on goal, which was caught and dropped by the netminder, and McKayla Fusco buried the ball in the back of the net.
