Roundup: Hickory's Colbert advances to PIAA golf championships

- — Hickory High junior golf ace Billy Colbert fired a 75 to finish tied for 6th at the PIAA Western Regional Class AA Golf Championships Wednesday.

Colbert and others battled chilly, day-long rain to post the score at Tom’s Run Golf Course, Blairsville, and become the first Hickory High player to qualify for states since 1994, according to Hickory coach David Gibb.

Two other locals competed, but didn’t qualify for state by placing in the top 20. Mercer’s Nate Guiler shot 90, while Hickory’s Ross Rosati came in with 95.

Region champ was Keenan Hickton of Sewickley Academy with a 3-under-par 69. District 10 champ Matt McCord of Titusville shot 76 to finish 12th.

The 36-hole state tourney will be held at Heritage Hills Golf Course, York, Oct. 21-22.

District 10 Class AA Team Championship


ä Mercyhurst Prep 5, Hickory 0 — At Pennbriar Athletic Club in Erie, the Lady Lakers (16-0) won their 14th consecutive District 10 team title with a sweep of the Lady Hornets (13-4).

Thursday’s match capped a dominant 4-day run by Mercyhurst Prep, who also won the AA singles and doubles titles this week.

Singles: Lauren Petrella (MP) def. Marissa Works, 6-0, 6-3; Caitlyn Schultz (MP) def. Lauren McGonigle, 6-1, 6-1; Brittany McBride (MP) def. Anna Derloni, 6-0, 6-1. Doubles: Katie Elia-Taylor Levinson (MP) def. Rachel Mettee-Nikki Marone, 6-3, 6-0; Nicole Freeman-Audrey Bell (MP) def. Bailey McLaughlin-Annalise Bianco, 6-0, 6-1.

“The girls left everything they had on the courts today,” said Hickory coach Joe Bender. “I couldn’t be more proud of this group of girls for all that they accomplished this season. We improved significantly since the regular season match-up with Prep. We went from winning 4 games to 10 games and leading matches early on.

“It’s a tough way to end the season, but ultimately this is the pathway to success and we are committed to it. My coaching staff (Lori Woods, Ed Newmeyer and Matt McKee) has been amazing at preparing and working with the girls all season,

“Besides a school record-breaking winning season, winning Region 1 outright, winning the Buhl Tournament and being the D-10 runner-up, our exhibition players went 73-11. It looks like we have a bright future ahead of us.”

˝ McDowell won its 10th straight D-10 Class AAA title with a 5-0 sweep of Central Tech at Pennbriar. The Lady Trojans also swept the district singles and doubles crowns this week.

GIRLS SOCCER

ä Hickory 10, Slippery Rock 2 —
At Slippery Rock, the Lady Hornets (8-0, 14-1-1) wrapped up the Region 2-AA championship with a win over the Lady Rockets.

Lauren Bell had a hat trick and 2 assists to lead Hickory. Jackie White had 2 goals and 1 assist, Sara Suler notched 1 goal and 3 assists and Gia Pascarella, Alaura Dillon, Isabella Spadafora and M.K. Bair had the other goals.

Also, Marissa DeJulia and Patrice Clemenza had 1 assist each for Hickory. Morgan McBride made 6 saves between the pipes for the Lady Hornets.

Hickory’s only loss of the season was to state-ranked Karns City and the tie came against Canfield, which is ranked in Ohio.

ä West Middlesex 3, Kennedy Catholic 1 — At Butala Stadium in Hermitage, KC took a 1-0 lead but WM (8-7-1) rallied to score 3 straight unanswered to win the match.

Molly Stonebraker, Kaitlyn Beck and Riley Lyons had the goals for WM. Kayla Ballard was credited with 2 assists and Stonebraker and Gretchen Elsey had 1 assist each. Brianna Spencer posted 9 saves in goal for the Ms. Reds.

Tessa Bonomo had the goal for KC on “Senior Recognition Day” assisted by Angelica Scoccia. Elizabeth Volkay posted 7 saves in goal.

KC’s seniors are Katie Trenga, Gabby Nevant, Gracie Izenas, Autumn Jarvie, Bianco Morris and Shelby McElhinney.

BOYS SOCCER

ä Hickory 1, Grove City 0 —
At Hornet Stadium Wednesday night, the host Hornets seniors were victorious in their final home contest. The lone goal was scored by Coulter Bishop, unassisted.

Senior goalie Donté Green had 9 saves in goal for the shutout. Senior defenders, Justin Peidle and Brady Leunis, were a big help in blanking the Eagles. Other dominant defenders were Matthew Costello, Jacob Andrzejewski and Noah Cole.

JV: Grove City, 4-0

ä West Middlesex 3, Sharpsville 0 —
At Sharpsville, coach Niki Nych’s Ms. Reds improved to 12-0 in Region 1 and 14-0 overall with the 25-14, 26-24, 25-20 win over the Lady Blue Devils (9-3, 9-5).
