WM, Wilmington volleyball teams fall in D-10 semis

- — The West Middlesex and Wilmington girls volleyball teams lost in the District 10 semifinals Thursday night at Meadville Area Senior High School’s “House of Thrills.”

In Class A, West Middlesex was swept by Cambridge Springs and Wilmington fell to Conneaut Area in Class AA.

˝ The Mercer boys and girls soccer teams will play for the District 10 Class A crowns tonight at Franklin High School. The Mercer girls face Wilmington at 5 p.m. while the Mercer boys square off against Mercyhurst Prep at 7 p.m.

The Mercer boys beat Mercyhurst Prep for the title last year and snapped the Lakers’ bid for 4 straight district crowns.

Class A girls soccer was only instituted 4 years ago in D-10 and the Lady Hounds won titles in 2010 and ’11. Fairview won it last season.


District 10 Semifinals

Class A

ä Cambridge Springs 3, West Middlesex 0 —
At Meadville, coach Nicki Nych’s Ms. Reds (16-1) suffered their 1st loss of the season to the Cambridge Springs Lady Blue Devils (15-3).

WM led the 1st game and had 2 game points, but CS rallied for a 27-25 win. The Lady Blue Devils would then close it out 25-19 and 25-16.

WM: Tori Roberts 17 digs; Aly Andrusky 12 points, 9 digs; Megan Hazlett 25 assists; Marissa Pursel 10 kills; Arieal Pratt 6 kills, 10 digs; Dani Krepps 9 digs; Saige Campbell 5 kills.

“It was a great season,” said Nych. “The girls worked extremely hard and did a 180 degree turnaround over the spring and summer. They responded to everything we tried to change and work on and our season proved that.

“We aren’t disappointed and hanging our heads. We played a great team and we fought a great battle.”

WM had a bye in the D-10 quarterfinals for winning the Region 1 championship while CS beat Lakeview in 5 games in the quarters.

Cambridge Springs will play Cochranton for the District 10 championship at 1 p.m. Saturday at Meadville High. Cochranton (15-0), which is ranked 6th in the state by the Pa. Volleyball Coaches Association, swept Maplewood (11-5) on Thursday, 25-10, 25-14, 25-8.

Class AA

ä Conneaut Area 3, Wilmington 0 —
At MASH, the season came to an end for the Lady Hounds (15-3) with a loss to Conneaut Area (15-1), which is ranked No. 9 in the state. Game scores were 25-8, 25-13, 25-16.

No stats were reported by Wilmington.

Wilmington beat Harbor Creek, 3-1, in the D-10 quarterfinals while Conneaut Area swept Gen. McLane.

Conneaut Area advances to Saturday’s District 10 title game to face Ft. LeBoeuf. It starts at 3 p.m. at MASH.

Ft. LeBoeuf (16-0) swept Corry (12-2) on Thursday in the semifinals. LeBoeuf beat Hickory, 3-0, in the quarterfinals while Corry swept Grove City.
