Roundup: Scurpas All-Staters in volleyball; Mercer, Greenville, Reynolds boys cagers win

---- — Sharpsville High’s Kristen and Paige Scurpa have been named to the 2012 Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association Class A All-State team.

The pair of seniors helped lead the Blue Darlings to this past season’s District 10 runner-up berth after bowing to Maplewood in 4 games. Sharpsville skipper Scott Scurpa’s squad ended 16-4 overall.

Kristen Scurpa served as a 5-foot-7 setter, while Paige Scurpa soared as a 5-9 outside-hitter.

Cochranton’s Aubrey Hering, a 5-10 senior middle-hitter, and Maplewood’s Emily Merritt, a 5-6 senior libero, and 5-8 sophomore outside-hitter Madalyn Nicols also were named All-State out of District 10.

WRESTLING

ä Greenville 42, Cochranton 31 —
At Greenville Tuesday, coach John Reynolds’ host Trojans triumphed on the strength of pins from Jacob Riffe (138), Zachary Miller (170), Jacob Morgan (195), Jase Paxson (106) and Joe Safner (120).

Morgan and Paxson required only 12 and 14 seconds, respectively.

For the visiting Redbirds, Jared Morrison (126), Caleb Peterson (152) and Cam Cyphert (285) forged falls, and standout Robert Boozer (145) added a major verdict.

ä Sharpsville 34, Lakeview 31 — At Sharpsville Tuesday, the Blue Devils of coach John Whalen and coach Tom Tingley’s Sailors opened the 2012-13 season with a thriller as Sharpsville edged Lakeview by 3 points.

Chris Enos (145), Gage Priester (170) and Ben Bucher (182) notched pins for the Blue Devils.

Evan Clayton (113) and Adam Dosch (126) posted falls for Lakeview.

In a thriller at 138, the Sailors’ Dustin Schliefer beat Miles Bowser in the ultimate tiebreaker.

ä McDowell 38, Reynolds 33 — At Erie Tuesday, it was a battle of perennial District 10 powers as the Class AAA northerners rallied from behind to win.

The match opened with Reynolds 138-pounder Mason McCollum notching a fall and Reynolds moved out to a 33-9 lead after a Logan Rickert pin at 220. However, McDowell won the next 6 weight classes to pull out the victory.

Also notching pins for Reynolds were Austin Matthews (160) and Jamar Henry (195). Mike Millero (170) won by medial forfeit after being injured by an illegal slam. Millero was taken to the hospital for examination.

“Even though we lost, I’m very proud of the effort,” said Reynolds coach Casey Taylor. “While we don’t like being 0-1, it was a great match overall. Now we’ll get ready for King of the Mountain (tournament this weekend).”

BOYS BASKETBALL

ä Reynolds 72, VisionQuest 37 —
At Transfer, coach Dan Kilgore’s Raiders improved to 2-1 by blowing out the Eagles in a non-region contest.

Reynolds jumped out to a 16-2 lead after 8 minutes of play and cruised past the visitors from Franklin.

Garrett Frable rifled in 18 points for the Raiders while Kyle McConnell bucketed 15 and Cory Woods added 14 markers.

Tynier Hargrove paced VisionQuest with 11 points.

ä Mercer 73, Jamestown 26 — At the County Seat, the host Mustangs’ Nate Guiler garnered a game-high 27 points, tossing in 7 fielders from beyond the arc.

Mercer (2-1) made a total of 12 triples, yet the Mustangs missed 10 of 11 free-throw attempts.

Jamestown (0-2) dropped its 2nd straight.

ä Greenville 55, Rocky Grove 26 — At Greenville, Luke Houpt posted 9 points and grabbed 8 rebounds as the Trojans (2-2) rolled past the Orioles.

Tyler Fattman and Daniel Addison both 8 points for Greenville.

Austin Morrison notched a game-high 10 points for Rocky Grove.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

ä Sharon 54, Jamestown 14 —
At Sharon, the host Lady Tigers (2-1) triumphed as Lexie Dabney drilled a dozen points and Mallory Torr tallied 11, while Janayia Chester corralled 6 rebounds.

Jamestown fell to 0-3.

ä West Middlesex 48, Commodore Perry 38 — At Sheakleyville, the visiting Ms. Reds rolled to a 13-4 first-quarter lead, withstood CP’s 17-point 2nd stanza, then outscored the Lady Panthers 12-6 during the decisive 4th frame.

West Middlesex (2-1) was led by Alexis Summers’ 12 points, Molly Stitt’s 10, and Kelsey Murray’s 8 caroms.

For Commodore Perry (2-2), Kate Powell and Autumn Campbell collected 11 and 10 points, respectively.

SWIMMING

Grove City High boys’ and girls’ teams both improved to 2-0 with recent wins against Oil City (no scores reported).

The Lady Eagles swept every event, led by Stefani Wendelschaefer (200 individual medley, 100 breaststroke) and Lauren Decker (100 butterfly, 50 freestyle). Also, Renee Decker (100 free, 100 backstroke), Emily Epenthener (200 free), Kimi Wendelschader (500 free), as well as all 3 relays.

The Eagles ended with a sweep, also, led by Austin Wilson (50, 100 free), Eric Schmidt (100 backstroke, 100 fly) Chris Karcher (100 backstroke) Samuel Archibald (500 free), Thomas Somora (200 IM), Jordan Caldwell (200 free) and all 3 relays.

Currently, Grove City swimmers have qualified for the annual District 10 Championships in 30 different events.

BOYS BOWLING

ä Warren Harding 2606, Brookfield 1843 —
At Bell-Wick Lanes Tuesday, Harding rolled to victory.

Brookfield scores were Bradley Bridge 214-158—372, Adam Brooks 192-175—367, Nick Kerr 125-150—275, Joey Grandon 132-112—244; Nelson Swartz 114, Matt Johnson 89.
