MERCER COUNTY — Grove City High boys and girls swim teams recently notched a pair of victories over Franklin and Slippery Rock.

The girls squad moved to 6-0 on the season. In the 100-66 win over Slippery Rock, the Lady Eagles started with a disqualification in the 200 medley relay, but bounced right back with 13 points in the 200 freestyle led by Renee Decker, Emily Eperthener and Kimmi Wendelschaefer. Other individual winners included: Lauren Decker, 50 free; Stefani Eperthener, 500 free; 200 free relay (Cassie Wolowic, Eperthener, Maria Wolinski, Alaina Thomas); 400 free relay (Renee & Lauren Decker, Meghan Terwilliger, Wendelschaefer).

“I’m very pleased with the overall performance,” said coach Karen Wendelschaefer. “We have some fine tuning before we head to Titusville (today) but the girls are ready and excited.”

Titusville is last year’s undefeated Region champion.

Against Franklin, the team score was 97-72 and leading the way were the victorius 200 medley relay and 200 free relay.

In the GC boys win over Slippery Rock, 114-55, individual winners were: Chris Karcher, 200 free; Austin Wilson, 50 and 100 free; Tim Sestak, 100 backstroke; Thomas Somora, 100 breaststroke. The Eagles also won the 200 medley relay (Eric Schmidt, Somora, Jordan Caldwell, Wilson) and 200 free relay (Karcher, Andrew Owrey, Mitch Kengor, Treg Stenger.

“The guys are still beaming from the win over Franklin (88-82),” said coach Wendelschaefer. “The guys are swimming strong and confident.”

Against Franklin, it came down to the final event and the Eagles placed 2nd and 3rd to secure the victory and remain undefeated. Franklin was on a 43-0 winning streak and was reigning region champion before the Eagles triumphed over the Knights.


ä Franklin 36, Sharon 35 — At Sharon, the visiting Knights notched the win as Dakota Geer (152) posted a pin.

Sharon (4-1), forced to forfeit 4 weight classes to Franklin, was led by falls from Beau Dignall (182), Jarray Norris (126) and Jason Clark (132) and a technical fall from Michael Bonner (138).

ä Sharpsville 48 Grove City 28 — At Sharpsville the host Blue Devils (10-5) dominated on falls from Ben BuChere (160), Cody Hughes (195), Jacob Llewellyn (220), Kaleb Robertson (285) and Andy Ryan (106).

For Grove City, Trey Maher (152) and Chet Simoni (170), forged falls, and Kenny Bable (126) a major verdict.

ä Greenville 69, Northwestern 6 — At Albion Tueday night, the visiting Trojans triumphed via falls from Derek Watt (132), Jake Riffe (138), Jacob Brown (145), Blake Horne (152), Zachary Miller (170), Justin Reynolds (182), and Randall Peabody (220).

Matthew Wheeler (120) notched Northwestern’s lone points, via a pin.


No results were submitted To The Herald on the Far at Youngstown Ursuline game.

Tuesday night, Greenville edged West Middlesex, 35-33, but results were reported to The Herald.


ä Hickory-Red 6, Kennedy Catholic 0 — Sharon Mettee (221, 2143, 9 consecutive strikes) led Hickory in the Baker format, aided by. Rachel Mettee (190). Brianna Gibbs (147) and Haley Salepo (146) keyed KC.

ä Meadville 6, Hickory-Black 0 — Elaina Snyder (183, 155) led the winners, while Justine Schultz and Jessica Flynn led Hickory.


ä Sharon 5, Sharpsville 1 — At Sunset Lanes, Nick Carlo (278, 269), Shane Young (248) and Steven Merchant (244) led the Tigers’ triumph. Mark Black (224), Steve Paris (172) and Jacob Pallo (171) led Sharpsville.
