The Reynolds High Raiders made a great start Friday as they seek to pull in their 16th Northwest Class AA Regional Wrestling Championship this weekend at Sharon High School.
Coach Casey Taylor Raiders put 7 wrestlers, led by 3-time champion Austin Matthews (152) into this morning’s semifinal round which begins at 9 a.m. The consolation finals are set for 3:15 p.m. with parade of champions at 4:45 and finals at 5.
Every defending champ advanced. Besides Matthews, those hoping to win a second crown are Sharon’s Jarray Norris (126); Redbank Valley’s Willis Gruver (113); Saegertown’s Tyler Vath (120); Kane’s Evan Delong (160); and Fort LeBoeuf’s Evan Daley (220).
While the big team points will the scored today, some other top contenders to stop Reynolds’s march to the top are Brookville with 6 in the semis and Fort LeBoeuf and Saegertown with 5 each. The team standings are: Reynolds 42, Brookville 33, Saegertown 29, Fort LeBoeuf and Redbank Valley 24 each, with Cochranton at 33.
Every District 10 champion advanced, but three D-9 winners were dumped in the quarterfinals Friday.
Following is a quick look at the tournament semifinals by weight class:
106 – The state’s top-rated wrestler Devin Brown (42-1) of Saegertown faces a familiar foe in the semis, Fort LeBoeuf’s Isaac Bengel, while on the other side of the bracket, Reynolds’ Seth Hogue tangles with D-9 champion Taylor Ortz of Brookville. Brown, Ortz and Hogue all recorded falls in the quarterfinals.
113 – Defending champ Willis Gruver (Redbank Valley) faces Reynolds’ Michael Bartolo in one semi today, while Kane’s Cody Blankenship, who defeated Gruver in the D-9 finals, meets Brookville’s Cole Aaron.
120 – Saegertown sophomore ace Tyler Vath takes on Fort LeBoeuf’s Tyler Kuzma this morning, while Northwestern’s Matt Wheeler meets D-9 winner Trent Neely of Smethport. Vath beat Wheeler in the D-10 finals last weekend.
126 – Defending champ Jarray Norris (33-2) of Sharon grabbed a first-period pin Friday and faces Saegertown’s Nick Monico in the semis. Ridgway’s Brett Himes edged Reynolds’ Mason McCollum, 3-1, on opening night and will meet Conneaut Area’s Kyle Lukowich, who pinned District 9 champion Jake Lancaster of Curwensville.
132 – Unbeaten Karl Lightner (29-0) of Kane goes up against Brookville’s Dalton Zimmerman in one semi, while Reynolds’ Cam Cianci faces Seneca freshman ace Adam Fish, the D-10 champion, in the other.
138 – Sharon senior Michael Bonner, the D-10 winner, cruised past Reynolds Matt Leise by tech fall Friday and takes on Coudersport’s Cody Bova this morning. On the other side of the bracket, D-9 champ Brock Zacherl of Brookville faces Matt Humes of Saegertown. If both district champs advance, the finals would be a rematch of last year’s regional semis, won by Zacherl, 13-7, over Bonner.
145 – Reynolds’ Levi Stoyer had a tough go Friday in edging Grove City senior Trey Maher, 4-2, in overtime. Today Stoyer faces Ty Haines of Redbank Valley. In the other semi, D-9 winner Zach Vroman of Brookville meets Cochranton’s Robert Boozer. Maher came back with a consolation victory for his 100th career win.
152 – Reynolds’ Austin Matthews (43-1) rolled to a major decision in his opener in his quest for a 4th straight regional crown. Matthews will meet long-time rival Tyler Harrington of Fort LeBoeuf, who the Raider beat 10-1 last week in the D-10 semis. Coudersport’s undefeated Kyle Bova (35-0) tangles with Port Allegany’s Sam Kysor.
160 – Defending champ Evan Delong of Kane faces Brookville’s Brodie Zacherl, while the other semi pairs Fort LeBoeuf’s D-10 champ Taylor Fox against Cole Shirey of Rebank Valley. DeLong sports a 24-1 record, the only loss coming against Union City’s Tim Vargo, a favorite to win at 170.
170 – Vargo (21-1) is probably headed for a District 10 finals rematch with Austin Andrews of Cochranton. The D-10 champ faces Alex Gular of Port Allegany in the semis, while Andrews meets Chris Matthews of Franklin. Vargo won a 4-2 overtime decision over Andrews last week, although Andrews had to go overtime to beat this morning’s opponent Matthews in the semifinals.
182 – Reynolds’ Jamar Henry received a quarterfinal forfeit to advance against D-9 champ Aaron Hook of Redbank Valley this morning. In the other semi, District 10 winner Dylan Reynolds faces Forest Tuttle of Coudersport. This could be a rematch of last week’s district final where Reynolds topped Henry, 7-3.
195 – Both district champs – Jake Wichert of Oswayo Valley and Trevor Beiter of Seneca — moved on. Wichert faces Corry’s Ryan Morris, while Beiter goes against Eisenhower’s Jake Johnson today.
220 – This could be another District 10 finals rematch where Fort LeBoeuf’s Evan Daley beat Cochranton’s Cam Cyphert in overtime. However, this morning Daley meets Reynolds’ Logan Rickert, who he pinned last week, while Cyphert takes on Youngsville’s Jaykup Durlin, who Cypert pinned in the D-10 semis. Durlin decked D-9 champ Cal Haines of Redbank Valley Friday.
285 – Again a possible D-10 finale do-over. Last week Slippery Rock’s Forrest Christman topped Union City’s Jeff Burger. However, in the semis today Burger meets Port Allegany’s unbeaten Nicholas Budd (31-0), who edged Reynolds Gene Ringer, 4-2, Friday. Christmann faces an old nemesis, Sam Breese of Lakeview, to beat Christmann in the Section 2 finals.
