Exposing Phil's record: Porter's Web site is critical of English

3rd CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT — Dr. Steven Porter is apparently trying to accomplish on the Internet what he couldn’t at the ballot box: oust U.S. Rep. Phil English from office.

Porter, an Erie County Democrat, came up short in 2004 and last month in his campaigns against the seven-term Republican incumbent. On Monday, he announced the creation of a Web site he hopes to use to expose English’s “record and hypocrisies.”

“I consider him to be a congressman of loose morality at best,” Porter wrote. “Immorality would be a closer description. I do not feel that this kind belongs in our government and as my own congressman I am ashamed to have him represent me.”

The site, paid for by the Porter For Congress committee, is It features a prominent picture of English with a circle and slash across his face and is a self-described “campaign to educate the voters and expose U.S. Rep. Phil English’s fear mongering tactics with the purpose of making Pennsylvania Phil-free.”

Porter said the site has been in the works for the better part of the month, but noted it wasn’t created until after the Nov. 7 election.

“I’d like people to really know what Phil English’s record is,” Porter said Monday of his motivation for the site. “It’s very difficult to get that out. Quite frankly, the media doesn’t do a wonderful job in exposing his hypocrisy. And it’s not just what he says, it’s how he votes.”

Messages left with English’s staff at his Washington office seeking comment weren’t returned Monday.

Dr. G. Terry Madonna, a noted expert on state and national politics, said it’s very unusual for a candidate to start a Web site immediately after a campaign and continue to go on the attack.
