Carl Free McElhaney of 6650 Maple Court, Kinsman, died at 7:25 a.m. Friday, June 16, 2006, in his home surrounded by his family and friends. He was 61.

Mr. McElhaney was born Nov. 17, 1944, in Greenville, a son of the late Herbert “Hub” and Elizabeth “Lib” McElhaney of Jamestown.

He was the beloved husband of Shirley Ann Wood McElhaney, whom he married Aug. 23, 2003. She survives.

Mr. McElhaney served with the Army as a combat engineer during a one-year tour in Vietnam and was recipient of a combat and service medal.

He retired after 11 years as a truck driver for Barr Nunn Transportation, Granger, Iowa, and worked for many years at Jamestown Paint Co.

Mr. McElhaney enjoyed spending time with family and friends; and fishing, reading, hunting, NASCAR, playing cards, making wine and watching ships on the Great Lakes while at his cottage, “The Love Nest,” in Conneaut, Ohio.

He also enjoyed attending the annual D-Day reenactment at the cottage and hosting an annual Tuscan party at his home in Kinsman.

Mr. McElhaney was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5424, Jamestown; Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks Lodge 145, Greenville; and Loyal Order of the Moose, Conneaut.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by: three daughters, Michelle Craig and her companion Joseph Buchholz, Westford; Maureen Frampton and her husband William, Jamestown; and Heather Hiland Sarko and her husband Matt, Hartford; a son, Frankie Hiland and his wife Meghan, Greene, Ohio; two sisters, Carol Babcock and her husband Ronald, Greenville; and Beth Scobbie and her husband Ronald, Jamestown; a brother, Kevin McElhaney and his wife Cindy, Jamestown; a son-in-law, Richard Craig, Greenville; and his grandchildren, Linda and Aleta Craig, Madeline Frampton, Jessica and Matthew Sarko and Frankie and Evan Hiland.

Mr. McElhaney was preceded in death by his father and two brothers, Harry Free McElhaney and Rodger McElhaney.
