Young bakers can enter state contest

MERCER – Young bakers are invited to enter the 2019 PA Preferred Junior Baking Cookies-Brownies-Bars contest to be held at the Mercer County Grange Fair.

The contest is sponsored by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s PA Preferred program and coordinated by the Pennsylvania State Association of County Fairs.  

A contestant participant must be an individual amateur baker ages 8 through 18 and a resident of Pennsylvania. The cookies, brownies or bars entry must include two PA Preferred ingredients. A comprehensive list of products is available at

Mercer County Grange Fair’s contest is a preliminary competition that leads to the selection for the final PA Preferred Junior Baking Contest Cookies, Brownies and Bars blue ribbon winner each January at the Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harrisburg. The first-place winner at the farm show will be awarded a cash prize of $500 for the winning PA Preferred cookies, brownies or bar recipe.

Entries for this contest can be dropped off at the fair grounds on Sunday from 2 and 5 p.m. or Monday from noon to 8 p.m. Judging will be held Tuesday.

Adult transfer enrollment at Penn State Shenango

SHARON — Penn State Shenango will hold an Adult and Transfer Enrollment Week from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. Stop by the Admissions Office in Lecture Hall room 225, located on Shenango Avenue in downtown Sharon. No appointment is necessary.

During the event, guests will have an opportunity to meet with an admissions counselor and take a tour of the campus. Guests will also learn about financial aid and find out about eligibility for Penn State Shenango’s $3,000 for a 3.0 GPA scholarship program. Prospective students may bring an official high school transcript or any official college transcript (in a sealed envelope) to have an application fast-tracked—the $65 application fee will be waived.

Westminster offers Summer Preview Days

NEW WILMINGTON – High school students interested in learning more about Westminster College are invited to attend one of the special Summer Preview Days in July and August.

Summer Preview Days — scheduled for July 12, 19, 22 and Aug. 2 — will introduce prospective students to Westminster College. Students will explore the campus, meet members of the Westminster family and learn about the college’s emphasis on collaborative, real-world learning experiences. Those attending will receive a $1,000 grant toward Westminster’s tuition for the first year.

Check-in will begin at 10:30 a.m., followed by a presentation addressing admissions and financial aid questions. Students and their families will enjoy a tour of Westminster’s campus, and the day will wrap with a complimentary lunch.
