Evelyn Shaffer was honored Oct. 22 for 55 years of teaching the preschool-kindergarten class in Wheatland-Farrell United Methodist Church, 75 Mercer Ave., Wheatland.

The celebration began with a special worship service followed by a “surprise reception.” The congregation presented her with a handmade lap quilt members worked together to create.

Wheatland Mayor Tom Staton presented Mrs. Shaffer a proclamation declaring Oct. 22 as “Evelyn Shaffer Day.”

She received letters from the bishop, district superintendent and former students commending her dedication and service.

Mrs. Shaffer was joined at the celebration by her family, friends and former students.

“Most everyone who has come through, got her at the start,” said the Rev. David Davis, the church’s pastor.

“She’s had a huge impact on the church.”
