On Sept. 18, the Pymatuning Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution presented Community Service Awards to two members of the community: Brian Kepple, Sharon, and Theresa Harkless Woods, Hermitage.

The DAR Community Service Award is a non-competitive award consisting of a certificate and pin. Community Service Awards may be presented for cultural, educational, humanitarian, patriotic, historic, citizenship, environmental, or conservation service activities.

Brian Kepple volunteers on multiple commissions/task forces for the city of Sharon, including the Economic and Community Development Commission, Neighborhood Revitalization Committee, Recreation Commission, and the Beautification Commission.

It was through the Beautification Committee that the Pymatuning Chapter DAR became acquainted with Kepple. Pymatuning Chapter adopted the VA Memorial Garden at the intersection of East State and Silver streets and North Oakland Avenue. The chapter prunes the bushes, weeds, and picks up litter to support the Sharon Beautification Commission.

As an example of Keppel’s volunteerism, he accepted the award after taking part in the Sharon High School Alumni Hall of Fame breakfast then spent the rest of the afternoon leading history walks of Sharon for the Sharon Historical Society.

Theresa Harkless Woods sewed and donated over 5,000 face masks to local elementary schools and to public distributions during the COVID dandemic and shutdown. She used every scrap of material she had. After posting her progress on her Facebook page, she began to receive donations of fabric left on her doorstep, and with the help of other volunteers was able to continue sewing masks (her current count is upwards of 6,000).

She recently completed her family genealogy documentation back to an American Revolutionary War patriot and submitted her application to join the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. She is Pymatuning Chapter’s newest member.

The Pymatuning Chapter nominated these individuals to the PSSDAR state chairman, who approved he nominations. Pymatuning Chapter was honored to present them their awards.
