Mercer band plans Christmas concert

MERCER — Mercer Community Band is planning to do something it has never done before to kick off its 30th season: perform a Christmas concert.

Known for its summer series of free concerts on Mercer County Courthouse Square, the band will play at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 9 in Mercer High School auditorium. Johnny Oakes will open the show at 6:15 p.m. with holiday selections. Admission to the concert is $1 or a non-perishable food item, with proceeds going to a local food bank.

‘Figaro’ dress rehearsal free to students, teachers

YOUNGSTOWN — Opera Western Reserve is opening a dress rehearsal of Mozart’s “The Marriage of Figaro” free to students and teachers at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Stambaugh Auditorium, Youngstown.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and activities include an instrument petting zoo and tours of the historic theater. Parents and guardians are asked to pay $5 each. Writers group sets fall conference for Sunday

PITTSBURGH — Western Pennsylvania Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators will hold a conference with writing, illustrating and industry workshops Sunday in the Greentree Radisson.

History museum holds Girl Scout Day for troops

PITTSBURGH — Carnegie Museum of Natural History, Pittsburgh, will hold Girl Scout Day for Brownies, Junior Girl Scouts, Cadettes, Senior Scouts and leaders from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Aside from having access to current exhibitions, the Scouts will be part of Scouts-only activities. Troops must register at 412-622-3289. Admission cost is $10 a person.

New Castle Playhouse schedules auditions

NEW CASTLE — New Castle Playhouse is holding auditions for two of its upcoming performances.

The playhouse needs five men and two women to appear in “The Sunshine Boys,” a comedy by Neil Simon about two successful vaudevillians who have retired and hate each other but are pulled together for one last show.

Auditions will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 12 and 13 at the playhouse. The show will be performed Jan. 19 through Feb. 4.

The playhouse is also looking for talented local high school students to try out for “Stars of Tomorrow,” which will be performed Jan. 6.
