MERCER COUNTY – PennDOT employees at the Mercer County maintenance garage, in partnership with American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 2102, will hold the 24th annual open house Sept.18.
The public event will feature extended hours again this year, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The change was made to further the mission of the program to highlight PennDOT’s commitment to serve the community and encourage highway safety.
The day will include a broad range of interactive displays and safety demonstrations by PennDOT and more than two dozen other state agencies and vendors.
Returning to this year’s event will be a “Paint the Plow” exhibit, which features snow plows painted by students from several Mercer County high schools. Applications to participate in the program are still being accepted and can be found online at www.penndot.gov/district1 under the Resources heading.
The PennDOT Worker’s Memorial will be on display at the open house.
The memorial, which is used to raise work zone safety awareness, includes 89 posts, one for each PennDOT employee who died in the line of duty since 1970.
Guided tours and donated refreshments will be provided to students who attend the free event as part of a school-sponsored field trip.
Teachers and school administrators can schedule a tour by contacting Amber Bell at 724-662-5350.
