HERMITAGE – Students from Ionta Elementary, Delahunty Middle and Hickory High School in Hermitage competed in the academic game World Events at Slippery Rock University on Jan. 25.
World Events is one of six games that are part of the Academic Games League of America.
The game includes two rounds of questions on current events from 2016 and two rounds on a different theme each year. The theme for this year was the Civil War.
Team “Smarter than Google” won third place in the Elementary Division that includes fifth and sixth graders. Team members included Lole Cantellops, Johann Cantellops, Emmett Walzer, Alexxa Miller and Noelle Dahstrom. Abby Gardner, Emmett Walzer, Johann Cantellops, Lole Cantellops and Aida Grove were undefeated players in the four rounds of competition.
The Middle Division includes seventh- and eighth-students. Team “Hamilton” won first place with team members Maggie Rumelfanger, Isabelle Frangakis, Sophia Gill, Julia Dahlstrom and Rhys Miller. Logan Phillips was on a combo team and tied for first place. The Aboltionists took second place with team members Antonio Giuseppucci, Taylor Lordo, Nick Scarvel, Gianna Brown and Arick Samoros. Isabelle Frangakis and Nick Stein-Snyder were undefeated players in the 7-8 Division.
Team “Feeling Civil” won second place in the Junior Division that includes ninth- and 10th-graders. Team members included Ilia Kulikov, Alex Nelson, Jacob Rumelfanger, Huanhuan Wang and Cole Reynolds. Jacob Rumelfanger and Cole Reynolds were undefeated players in the 9-10 Division.
The Senior Division includes students in grades 11 and 12. Team “I Hit a Stonewall Once” took first place with Courtney Matey, Michaela Burkhauser, Peyson Weekley, Olivia Jacobson and John Daniels. Courtney Matey and Peyson Weekley were undefeated players in the Senior Division.
These students also participated: Elementary Division – Mallory Nucerino, Mariah Swanson, Kelly Walton and Remy Abalos. Middle Division – Jacob Vance, Maya Baker, Colin Schroyer, Grant Schubert, Alexis Myers and Tom Walls. Junior Division – Mara Weekley, Makenna Miller, Ricky Rogers, Michael Morelli and Nickolas Joanow.
Students who were on a first-place team or were undefeated players qualify to compete in the Academic Games Tri-Bowl at Grove City College in March.
Lindsay Ramage and David Gibb coached the Junior and Senior Division teams. Nancy Bires coached the Elementary and Middle Divisions. The games are sponsored by Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV.
