Earl R. Carothers of 788 Franklin Road, Jackson Township, died at 8:05 p.m. Sunday (4-2-06) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System after a brief illness. He was 79.

Mr. Carothers was born July 26, 1926, in Grove City to Roy O. and Margaret D. Bemesderfer Carothers.

A 1944 graduate of Grove City High School, he was a truck driver for a short time and then a mechanic for more than 32 years at the former Merco Motors of Mercer. He then worked at Cooper Bessemer, Grove City, and retired in 1988 from General Electric Co., Grove City and Pine Township.

Earl was a member of Mercer Baptist Church; American Legion Post 159, Mercer; Free and Accepted Masons Hebron Lodge 575, Coolspring Township; and Scottish Rite’s New Castle Consistory.

He enjoyed gardening.

His wife, the former Alice C. McLellan, whom he married Sept. 11, 1947, preceded him in death on March 15 of this year.

Also surviving are: a son, James E. Carothers and his wife Cheryl, Stoneboro; three grandsons, Michael Carothers, Girard, Ohio; Jonathan Carothers, Hanover, Pa.; and Matthew Carothers, Stoneboro; and two great-grandchildren, Austin Carothers and Courtney Carothers, both Jackson Center.

Besides his wife, Earl was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, William J. Carothers.

Interment: Oak Hill Cemetery, Sandy Lake Township.
