Evelyn Bucklin Rice

A memorial service will be Tuesday (6-27-06) for Evelyn Bucklin Rice, formerly of Hermitage Hills, Hermitage. She died at 5:50 a.m. Saturday (6-24-06) in Countryside Convalescent Home, East Lackawannock Township. She was 89.

Mrs. Rice was born Feb. 26, 1917, in Dennison, Texas, to James Vaughn and Minnie Louise McDade Hunt.

She earned a bachelor of science degree in library science from North Texas State University.

She was the wife of Dr. Dale Rice, who preceded her in death March 2, 1964.

They were married in First Presbyterian Church, Sharon, where she remained a member.

Mrs. Rice taught school for a short time and was also a co-owner of the former Inn Shop which was in the Shenango Inn.

In her younger years, she was a very active member of Sharon Country Club, serving on numerous committees.

She was also a member of the former Sharon General Hospital Women’s Auxiliary. There, she was one of the women instrumental in starting the coffee shop.

A true Southern belle, Mrs. Rice enjoyed life to the fullest.

She was an avid tennis player and liked to show off the many gold medals she won in the Senior Games played in North Carolina.

Mrs. Rice also played for many local tennis clubs in the Shenango Valley.

Surviving are: two sons, Mark Rice and his wife, Judy, of Hermitage; and James Rice and his wife, Sue, of Sherman, Conn.; a daughter, Jane Barnes and her husband, Randy, of Clarkston, Mich.; a brother, Marvin Hunt and his wife, Jane, of Texas; six grandchildren, Doug Rice and his wife, Valerie; Debra Rossi and her husband, Mark; Amber Bilscq, April Bils, Jamie Rice and Lindsay Rice; and two great-grandchildren, Dominic and Giavanna Rossi.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son, Roy Lynn Rice; and two brothers, Kenneth and Ray Hunt

Burial: Hillcrest Memorial Park, Hermitage.
