fatal cycle wreck

Southwest Mercer County Regional police investigate at the scene of a fatal three-vehicle crash Saturday in Shenango Township. William Edward Schell III, 19, of Farrell, was killed when his motorcycle hit a van on Mercer-West Middlesex Road at state Route 60.

A Farrell man was killed Saturday when his motorcycle hit a van in Shenango Township.

William Edward Schell III, 19, of 2012 Landay Lane, was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:45 p.m. by Mercer County Coroner J. Bradley McGonigle III. He was wearing a helmet, a spokesman from the coroner’s office said.

The crash happened at 11:37 a.m. and involved three vehicles, Southwest Mercer County Regional Police said.

“We’re still trying to piece it together,” Chief Riley Smoot Jr. said Saturday night.

Police took a Cleveland man into custody after they said he fled the scene of the crash. Mahommed Mahammad, 35, was stopped at the 3-mile marker on Interstate 80 westbound, police said.

Schell was traveling east on Mercer-West Middlesex Road when his motorcycle hit the rear left side of a van that pulled out into the eastbound lane of Mercer-West Middlesex from the southbound exit of Route 60, McGonigle said in a news release.

Smoot said Mahammad was driving the van and it looks like either he didn’t see the motorcycle or Schell didn’t see the van.

A third vehicle was traveling west and Smoot speculated that Schell may have tried to drive between the van and the other vehicle to avoid a collision when he clipped the van.

No charges were filed Saturday, Smoot said. Police were still interviewing witnesses.

McGonigle ruled Schell’s death an accident and said that he died from blunt force trauma to the head and chest.

No other injuries were reported, police said.
