A funeral Mass of Christian burial will be Wednesday (4-19-06) for John B. Gilpin, 611 Leona St., Sharpsville. He died at 1:40 p.m. Saturday (4-15-06) in his residence with his family by his side. He was 82.

Mr. Gilpin was born Sept. 23, 1923, in Fayette, Ala., to John Verner and Lou Rena Mitchell Gilpin.

John was a World War II veteran. During wartime, he served in North Africa and Italy as a communications staff sergeant with Company B, 133rd Infantry, 34th Division of the Army. He received a Bronze Star Medal and a Purple Heart Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters.

Mr. Gilpin was married to Theresa Petricini on Dec. 15, 1945, in St. Anthony Church, Farrell. She preceded him in death Nov. 29, 2003.

He was employed by Shenango Inc., Sharpsville, for 26 years before retiring in 1973.

He was a member of St. Bartholomew Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6404, both Sharpsville; and Disabled American Veterans, New Castle.

Mr. Gilpin enjoyed spending time with his family, doing projects around his house, gardening and traveling, especially trips taken to Italy with his wife.

Surviving are: a daughter, Jeannette Jennings and her husband, Gary, Hermitage; a son, John D. Gilpin and his wife, Patricia, Conneaut, Ohio; a grandson, Stephen M. Jennings and his wife, Cynthia, Hubbard; four granddaughters, Stacey M. Bianco, and her former husband, Mark A. Bianco; and Melissa M. Winslow and her husband, David, all Hermitage; and Rachael E. and Sarah L. Gilpin, both Conneaut; and six great-grandchildren, Alexandria M. and Courtney L. Jennings, Hubbard; and Mark A. and Andrew M. Bianco, Justin D. and Meredith M. Winslow, all Hermitage.

In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Postelle Dawsey; and a brother, Wilburn Gilpin.

The family suggests memorial donations be sent to St. Bartholomew Church, 311 W. Ridge Ave., Sharpsville 16150.

Interment: St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hermitage, with military service by Sharon Honor Guard.
