Joseph C. Reiter, 275 Sterling Ave., Apartment 114, Sharon, passed away 7 p.m. Sunday (10-8-06) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System of natural causes after a brief illness. He was 88.

Mr. Reiter was born June 20, 1918, in Sykesville, Pa., to Benjamin J. and Agnes Lill Reiter.

Joseph was a 1935 graduate of Sykesville High School. He worked for more than 30 years as fire chief for the City of Sharon fire department.

After retiring, he worked for 10 years as a warehouse manager for Goldstein’s Furniture in Sharon.

Mr. Reiter was a sergeant in the Army during World War II and earned two Bronze Stars in the Western and Asiatic Pacific theaters.

Joe was a member of Mercer County Genealogical Society. He enjoyed reading, watching sporting events, gardening and the outdoors, including hunting and fishing.

He was known for his keen sense of humor and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Joe was of the Protestant faith.

Mr. Reiter married his wife, Pauline L. McLaughlin Reiter, on Dec. 29, 1945. She passed away May 8, 1995.

Surviving are: two daughters, Carolyn Reiter, North Jackson, Ohio; and Sally and her husband Steven Naples, New Castle; three sons, Lynn Reiter, Petaluma, Calif.; John Reiter, Dallas; and Paul and his wife Linda Reiter, Sharon; a grandson, Lloyd and his wife, Julie Kelly, Fredonia, N.Y.; three great-granddaughters, Angelique, Andrianna and Elizabeth; and three great-grandsons, Steven, Jakeb and Nicholas.

Besides his wife, Joseph is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Howard and Douglas Reiter; and a great-granddaughter, Amber.
