A Cochranton man has been sentenced to 11 to 22 years in state prison for committing sexual acts against two young girls more than four years ago.
Michael Leroy Truitt was given the sentence by Crawford County Court of Common Pleas Judge John Spataro after pleading guilty but mentally ill in county court in July to a total of seven of the 42 counts filed against him in 2016.
Pennsylvania State Police charged Truitt with committing multiple sexual acts against two girls who were 10 years old or younger at the time the acts took place. The incidents took place between April 1, 2012, and May 18, 2015, at locations in Cochranton and Meadville, according to court documents.
The investigation into Truitt by state police began in May 2015 after police were alerted to the incidents from a 24-hour police notice that stated a girl asked to talk privately after a presentation in the classroom about "good touch, bad touch," according to court documents.
During the police investigation, a forensic interviewer spoke with two girls, born in 2005 and 2008, according to court documents. Both girls reported multiple occasions where Truitt engaged in inappropriate sexual acts with one or both girls, according to court documents.
State police charged Truitt in April 2016 with a total of 42 counts — five first-degree felony counts of rape of a child, 10 first-degree felony counts of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a child, two first-degree felony counts of unlawful contact with a minor, two second-degree felony counts of aggravated indecent assault of a child less than 13 years old, 21 third-degree felony counts of indecent assault of a person less than 13 years old and two third-degree felony counts of corruption of minors.
In July of this year, Spataro ruled Truitt, now 56, was competent to stand trial in county court following receipt of a forensic psychiatric examination by Dr. Curtis Mayernik.
Truitt then pleaded guilty but mentally ill to two counts first-degree felony counts of rape of a child; four first-degree felony counts of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a child; and a second-degree felony count of aggravated indecent assault.
Spataro sentenced Truitt on Monday to a total of 11 to 22 years in state prison with 1,073 days pre-sentence jail credit. Truitt also was ordered to pay $1,400 in fines plus court costs.
