Fire destroys Liberty Twp. business

GARY CHURCH | HeraldSmoldering vehicle bodies and bent metal shelving and building framework were all that was left after a fire raged through Marpac Corp. in Liberty Township early Friday.

LIBERTY TOWNSHIP — An industrial fire early Friday destroyed a Grove City-area business and 12 of its vehicles.

The fire broke out about 2:45 a.m. at the Marpac Corp., 361 Amsterdam Road, Liberty Township.

The company deals in industrial quantities of automotive products such a antifreeze, windshield washer fluid and solvents as well as cleaning supplies such as hand soap and janitorial supplies. Because some chemicals were involved, the state Department of Environmental Protection and a New Jersey specialty cleanup company were called.

The owner, Dan Martin said no one was injured in the fire. He added, “25 years of work, gone in an hour.”

The many oil-based products were in the building caused the fire to spread to the driveway, since they moved to the top of water used by the firefighters.

The company employs seven people.

Martin said eight or nine fire companies responded to the scene. Pine Township Volunteer Fire Department was the first on scene, because they were at an accident nearby.

No cause for the fire has been determined.
