HERMITAGE — Local shoppers can expect a new craft store to shop at, starting some time next year.

The former Michael’s craft store at 3380 E. State St., Hermitage, will become a Hobby Lobby, according to an official announcement from Hobby Lobby. The company confirmed that a lease was signed and the store was expected to open in early 2022.

A construction permit for Hobby Lobby Stores, dated June 22, and an artist’s rendition of the planned Hobby Lobby were posted in the building’s front entrance.

The building has been vacant since January, when the former Michael’s permanently closed. The company announced late last year their intention to not renew their lease and encouraged local customers to visit nearby Michael’s locations, including stores in Niles, and Boardman, Ohio, or to shop online.

Prior to Michael’s, the building was a Pat Catan’s craft store. Michael’s purchased the Pat Catan’s chain and closed several stores in 2019. The Hermitage location was converted into a short-lived Michael’s store.
