Indecent assaults allegedly spanned a decade

SHARON – A Sharon man has been accused of sexually assaulting a girl over a period of almost a decade, starting when she was 5.

Richard Dean Kephart, 68, of 437 Delaware St., was charged with aggravated indecent assault, unlawful contact with a minor, indecent assault, endangering the welfare of a minor and corruption of minors for his alleged involvement in the case.

Pennsylvania State Police interviewed the girl, who said she used to spend time at the home of a relative who lived with Kephart at the time. She said Kephart sometimes took care of her when she visited.

The girl said he started exposing himself to her when she was 5, then the assault elevated to him touching her inappropriately, according to an affidavit of probable cause filed in the case.

Police said the assaults continued until the victim was 10, when Kephart moved to South Pymatuning Township as the abuse continued.

When the girl turned 14, the incidents decreased in frequency to about twice a week and stopped completely after she turned 16, according to the affidavit.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. Wednesday before District Judge Brian R. Arthur in Greenville.
