SHARON — A Sharon man is in Mercer County Jail after a woman was allegedly shot in his apartment over the weekend.

Ezra Daye, 20, a resident of 579 Sherman Ave., Apt. 2, was charged with criminal homicide, two counts of aggravated assault, prohibited possession of a firearm and fugitive from justice after Sharon police officers responded to a report of a woman shot at 12:42 a.m. Saturday at the apartment, according to a press release from Sharon police.

Officers discovered Kelli K. Johnston, 20, of Masury, Ohio and Sharon, who was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the head. Johnston was taken by ambulance to Sharon Regional Hospital, then flown to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Youngstown, Ohio, where she later died from her injury, the release states.

Sharon police arrested Daye on warrants from Trumbull County, Ohio, and Mercer County for unrelated cases. Daye will remain in Mercer County Jail pending his arraignment, according to police.

The Mercer County District Attorney’s Office had no further information available at the time of the release on Saturday.

Daye appeared before District Judge Mary Odem for his preliminary arraignment at 9 a.m. Saturday. His next appearance in court will be for his preliminary hearing at 3 p.m. Aug. 20, according to court documents.
