COOLSPRING TOWNSHIP – State police chased burglary suspects on Thursday evening through Meadville into Girard, Pa., before disabling the suspects’ vehicle.

The pursuit began after troopers were dispatched at 5:06 p.m. Thursday to a home in Coolspring Township in response to a report of a burglary in progress.

Police said the residents returned home to find an unfamiliar vehicle in their driveway and saw two black men come out of the house carrying some of the victims’ possessions.

The two men, later identified as William Jackson, 30, and Tyquan Smith, 24, both of Erie, drove away west on U.S. Route 62 toward Interstate 79 in a white car, police said.

Police said the troopers located the vehicle and chased it along Route 62 and onto Interstate 79 north, as Jackson and Smith threw the victims’ property out of the window.

The pursuit reached speeds of 120 mph and continued for 42 miles before police used tire deflation strips and a maneuver to disable the suspects’ vehicle, police said.

Jackson and Smith were charged with burglary, fleeing and eluding and related charges and were taken to the Mercer County Jail to await their arraignment, police said.

Troopers from Erie and Crawford counties assisted troopers from Mercer County.
