A Volant-area man police say severely beat his girlfriend’s young children is being held in jail on $200,000 bond, police said.

Samuel Eugene Whisel, 26, assaulted an 18-month-old girl around 10 p.m. Sunday at a home on Kino Road in Washington Township, Lawrence County, state police reported Wednesday.

On Tuesday, police said the girl’s mother, who lives with Whisel, took her to Grove City Medical Center, Pine Township, for treatment.

The girl, who suffered severe facial and thigh contusions and had her arms seriously broken in two places, was taken to Children’s Hospital, Pittsburgh, police said.

While the girl was being treated at the hospital, police say Whisel beat the girl’s 3-year-old brother, fracturing the boy’s skull and lacerating his liver. The boy also was taken to Children’s Hospital.

Whisel was arrested Wednesday and charged with two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of endangering the welfare of children and two counts of recklessly endangering another person, police said.

State police and Lawrence County Children and Youth Services caseworkers went to Whisel’s home about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday after hospital staff told them Whisel was there with the boy, police said.

After Whisel denied the boy was there, police searched the home and found the boy “in a rear bedroom, badly beaten and bruised,” according to the police report.

He was taken to the hospital of Jameson Health System, New Castle, before being transferred to Children’s, police said.

Police said they don’t believe alcohol or drugs played a role in the incidents, which are being investigated.
