SOUTH PYMATUNING TOWNSHIP — An event set up for residents to meet the township’s new chief of police has been canceled.
The “meet and greet” event was originally scheduled from 5:30 to 7 p.m. today at the fire hall.
Paul Smith, of Beaver Falls, was officially hired as the chief of police at the May 8 township meeting.
South Pymatuning has been under state police coverage since its police department was temporarily dissolved in February.
Supervisor Rose Lyons said Smith will spearhead the hiring process of the township’s new police officers, as well as implement policies and operating procedures before the department can be reactivated by its June 1 goal.
Smith was an officer in Baden Borough for five years before serving as a state constable in Beaver Falls for 14 years. His police career started as an officer for the Baltimore Police Department in 1982.
