BROOKFIELD — The Strimbu Memorial Fund’s 30th annual Strimbu Memorial Barbecue will be May 1 at Yankee Lake Ballroom.

The event is a significant fundraiser for the memorial fund, which has provided more than $3.5 million to support academic scholarships, local economic development groups, non-profit organizations and other charitable ventures since its inception in 1990.

“The Strimbu Memorial Fund was created to perpetuate the work of the late Nick Strimbu Jr., who had a passion for leading individuals and economic development agencies in order to attract, assist and retain the industrial base of the valley,” said board President Jim Grasso. “In addition, when the Strimbu Memorial Fund awards scholarships to area students, we are investing in the life of a person — and that is worth millions.”

At this year’s event, the fund will award leadership college scholarships in the amount of $2,000 each to qualified high school seniors from 12 local school districts with an overall top student receiving a $10,000 scholarship.

Doors will open at 5 p.m. for the event, with a dinner catered by Jeffrey Chrystal Catering. The endless buffet will be modeled after a full-scale Texas-style barbecue and a multitude of appetizers. The offerings will include blackened catfish, barbecue ribs, roast leg of lamb and pork loin.

Dinner will be served until 9 p.m., with wood fire-baked pizzas served until 11.

Country-rock star Chris Higbee will provide the entertainment. An extraordinary fiddle player, Higbee has performed with musical legend Charlie Daniels.

The event also will include silent and live auctions, with available items including utility vehicles, travel packages, Lake Erie fishing trips, sporting event tickets and loge seating opportunities, furniture, dinner packages and jewelry.
